  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Good enough...

You mean "how big"? :-)

Jim

 I had that coming.

It will be HUGE. I have no doubt. If I become a sufficiently good cinematographer I shall personally endeavor to buy multiple specimen.

But going from R1 to Scarlet S35, which is a roughly similar feature set, right? That was a nice volume reduction... Could you squeeze that into the volume of a GH-1/GF-1 next round?

No idea... tell me how big that is.

Jim

If you have no idea then I'm at even more of a loss! No biggie though, just glad you are out there doing what you love and making history while you are at it.

I will look forward to your 2/3 announcement mid May.

Jim, I'd love to work at Red too, but I wouldn't last 2 weeks. Think about it: Everybody from the Boss across is working 24/7 on problems that no "Fortune 500" company wants to go near. I mean do you actually have office hours? I bet the lock on the front door could get broken and no one would know about it for weeks. Then you have to listen to the incessant whining from all of us who aren't willing to pull the industry along kicking and screaming... while we kick and scream. You set impossible goals and achieve them, you're never satisfied with the status quo, what a meat-grinder... Hey, wait a minute, I'm actually learning a lot about myself here... ;)

Not exactly sure what you said but I'm with you... :-)

Jim

Is there a RED BLASTER (i.e. projector) in the works?

I'm asking because I am excited about the possibilities for independent productions, thanks to REDs cameras. But talking to cinema owners, it turns out that the upcoming projectors there are so expensive, that they will be partially owned by the big studios, who in turn get to dictate which films the cinema has to show. If I want to show my film locally in a town in Norway, I have to pay Hollywood for every hour of using their projector.

Having an affordable means for projection could truly revolutionize the independent cinema. And in extension: imagine if some company offered 4k films for private people to download. Now, wouldn't that be awesome?

Okay, a vacation is probably deserved, but two weeks only. May I suggest Branson, Missouri?

i say outerspace, like one of them russian space tour, and take several epics with you!

RED is tired. Red is excited. We have no idea what we are doing. And yet we are changing the world. Freudiana.

We have no clue what our deliveries will be. We have never done this before. But somehow we feel empowered. Somehow we feel like we are destined to change everything. Hard to explain. But I would bet on us. Not sure exactly why... but I would.

Are there any bookies taking action in Vegas for the RED releases.

I'd like to bet on that, FOR REAL.

Do you have the actual date for the Mid-May announcment yet, or are you waiting on key pieces before knowing when you'll do it.

Or HELL better yet, lets just have the mid-May announcment RIGHT now.

Mid-May is just that. I called that date in the hopes I would have the info I needed to say something relevant. Let's hope...

You got it BOSS!

Hey.... A man can have dreams can't he?

... realtime ProRes is available with RED Rocket™™™ (fairly cheap considering the price of other options) and REDCODE to DNX-HD is native now to AVID. Plus, you have 4K, 4.5K or 5K files when you need them.

Jim

Yes. That's the reason why I will order a RedRocket with the MX-Upgrade when my camera is due.

Nevertheless, ProRes/DNxHD off the camera, no transcoding is tempting...

I fully agree that REDCODE is the magic behind Red's camera systems. But Red is not the only one using compressed RAW. We should not forget CineForm and the SI2K in this regard.

well, as this seems to be a good time for questions...I'm just writing my final paper on a comparison between the Nouvelle Vague and current developments.

Jim, would you say that after sound came to film and small cameras with sensitive filmstock defined the look of the Nouvelle Vague, Epic (as the perfection of digital cameras) will be the next step in cinema (respectivly indepent productions)?

If you're in the mood to spill the beans Jim, what can you tell us about RED's foray into lighting with those HMI ballasts?
