  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Global Media Pro batteries

Heh, that reads a little harsh. I don't mean it as an attack against them at all... it's just an unfortunate design oversight. No backhandedness in there.

It does not read harsh Brook, it's true. I'm sure RED understands and wont make the same oversight on the new models.

Their batteries are nice, but AB has a large market share, to ignore this is to ignore the wants and needs of many.

Personally I am still hoping this issue can be addressed in the R1 as I will always us AB batteries as long as I own other cameras as well as RED/epic/scarlet.

Finally got around to write a description on how to fix the problem on my 190Wh Globalmediapros - and how I narrowed down the problem. Too many pictures to post here on reduser, so you'll have to do with my blog ;)

(And it is quite nice having power for hours on a portable battery.)

Great tip. Good work figuring this out.

I've got the same type of batteries but I got them from another dealer. I modified my battery plates for other reasons and chose to connect only the + and - wires. That also solves the problem but less elegantly than your procedure. As Brook notes - the 190's last quite a while on 1 LED light remaining.

@James.
I've charged my batteries on an IDX charger with no problems. Since they are the same chemistry it should work.

Well, with all due respect. To put the record straight, we didn't ignore anything.

We acknowledge that AB's and IDX's products are very good.

However like other players in this industry, maybe they needed to see us already successful before coming to the RED party.

Meanwhile, Jim has invested in engineering a very attractive alternative solution - the RED-BRICK 140.

It's inexpensive, it offers high capacity, and it's very reliable.

Yes, you can use alternative batteries. But the camera is designed around our own battery system because it really is the best option.

If our current battery system does not satisfy your requirements, or if you have any suggestions for improvements we can make, please do tell us.

Stuart, the only improvement needed is a universal voltage meter that replaces the %meter when Red Batteries are not in use. This is not nearly as accurate as the Red battery meter so it shouldn't have any effect on those sales. But it would mean worlds to those who require other power options, specifically battery blocks. Anton Bauer has a very nice battery block system but we still end up guessing when it's gonna die, and it would be great if the camera did it's auto shut down when the voltage drops below a certain threshold. I personally own two red power systems and think they're very well thought out but they are not ideal for all day shooting on a dolly. If you really aren't capable of supporting 3rd part voltage metering then how about making an affordable battery block that can run the camera for at least 5 hours continuously. And if that doesn't interest you how about selling a voltage adapter that takes in 12-14V XLR power and converts it to the proper Red plug with % metering. I'd pay $250-$300 for such a box.

Does anyone know if these batteries can be charged on an AB Titan or do you need to buy their charger for their bat's?

AB chargers can only charge AB batteries. So yes, you will need a GMP charger to charge GMP batteries. I am not sure if other 3rd party chargers will work for GMP.

They do. I have - and love - GMP batteries (320 Wh) and they work flawlessly on a Bebob V-Mount charger.

Anyone know if Scarlet will read the voltage on the GMP batteries? Trying to deiced if I want to get the digital version and if its worth the extra $100?

Depends on the battery plate you're using. The Viewfactor plate gives you voltage only, the Wooden Camera plate gives you % I believe.

I have a RED to XLR cable, I was going to use my 90w Battery belt, but I got all of 5 min ( 7 year old 12v belt). So I found V or AB mount to xlr for $30. It seems that the GMP bat for RED is only a V mount. I currently have 2 AB and a Titan 2 charger, but I guess it would be ok to get V mount for the Scarlet, unless someone has a reason I should stick to the AB mount? Would be nice if they had an AB red battery...

AB mount locks down a lot better than V-Mount. A lot of people have reported V-Mounts "popping loose" if camera is bumped or jolted. I've never had an AB mount battery come undone...

Thanks Trevor. I kinda like the idea of having the digital AB version so I can easily check the battery state on or off the cam. It's an extra $100, but is it worth getting?

I have to agree, I had issues with several other popular bats, and I gotta say, the RED BRICKS were rock-solid while third-party juice didn't work that well.
