  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Glidecam 4000 Pro with Scarlet X....on the cheap!

I'll test with a redvolt, but expect I will fly with my V mount on a belt clip.
forget it, this will throw your rig out of the balance immediately, unless you will replace the wires with the thinnest available, but you need to consider voltage and power draw
I think I'm going to purchase the arm brace to even out the pressure off my wrist and across my forearm too.
this will help a lot moving majority of stress to the bicep
Where are you finding your key fatigue point?
that would be your forearm;
the only way to make this config work without arm and vest is to move power source and the monitor down to the sled, you don't need your monitor on top anyways,
this way you will distribute total weight across the rig without increasing it, and using essential components as a counterweight, keeping the total weight at the minimum,
but this is not cheap, just to rewire LCD and power will cost you around $400, and if this works great for flying DSLRs and small camcorders it's not the best way to fly cameras like Scarlet/Epic;

The video does exactly what the thread titile states. Matt managed to get a good balance with the Scarlet/Glidecam. I found it interesting to watch him using it and seeing how it fly's.

Check out what he can do with a 5d/Glidecam setup, its impressive: https://vimeo.com/18467488

Matt, we dont all have guns like yours so I would say the x-10 is a must!

Looking forward to seeing what you do with this combo.

the best 5d footage ive ever seen this is just !@#$%+_P)(*&^%#$%^&* AWESOME

Where did that company get their name "Grass Valley"

I live near a town called Grass Valley, CA.

Thanks guys :) And Harry, I'll be at NAB demoing for Grass Valley....hopefully see you next time :)

"cos?" "footy?"

...cos it looks shit....thats why :)

I posted this out of excitement that I actually got a half decent balance without an arm/vest AND without a detatchable battery plate. Today I had the idea of using the Samurai as my monitor because the HDSDI cable reached! So like I said, I'll post some footy worthy of posting when I get the balance perfect (with battery down below)....is that okay?

I've been flying a stripped down Scarlet on the Glidecam HD4000, Smooth Shooter arm and vest with very good results. Although I personally need more practice (to eliminate visible footfalls when walking fast/running), it is definitely possible to get professional-looking results with a Glidecam and Scarlet. Total cost (not counting C-stand and bracket) is about $2K from BH. I'll post when I get transcodes.

It's hard to imagine meeting the needs of professional production (which I'm feeling more than ever is not the audience here) with anything less than the full arm and vest. There has yet to be a shooting situation where, even with an arm brace, I would have been able to hold the rig long enough for multiple takes.

Glidecam HD4000, Smooth Shooter arm and vest

Glidecam HD4000, X-10 arm and vest.. wil be suitable and fair enough to fly around

I think that's more or less what I said in the post previous to yours (and which you quoted), depending on what you mean by "fly around."

Im gonna do some tests thursday. My Glidecam is rented out right now. Just did some weight test with the Scarlet and got it down to 10lbs exactly, which is the max weight.

Glidecam 4000HD
Redvolt power
Red Pro Monitor

Ill try and post Thursday and let you know.

Epic + RED 18-50mm + All Star Universal Mount + HD4000 + X-10 + View Factor FF + Red MB + All Star Top Handle + HDMI monitor+ RED Belt Clip (Plate)

No RED Volt

Above setup is HD4000 with X-10 (not handheld - LOL)
How is the X-10, by the way? I'm thinking about buying one but would like some opinions first.

Got X-10 - worth every penny. But if you ok to spent about 6-8K for a really good one it would be much better option :) Glidecam sleds extremly difficult to adjust. But with some pain you can get absolutely professional results - same as on 10K system.

I haven't tried the X-10 as I only own the Smooth Shooter, but I can get great results with it. I also find the sled very easy to adjust and can set up a completely out-of-balance rig in 2-3 minutes. However, again, I've not tried another so I don't have anything to compare it to.

I fly the Scarlet brain, monitor, Tokina 11-16 (or Canon 28/f1.4) and AB setup. I don't know the weight but I do know that if I add any more it will be too top heavy to fly. I may try to purchase additional weights for the bottom. The Smooth Shooter can take more weight than what I fly and still have room for adjustment. How much more weight my back can take is unknown.

Try this if interested (soon this will be discontinue)

I don't see the point to use a 15K$ to 30K$ cinecam with a consumer stabilizer... You have tons of great steadi tools out there for real pro use : Tiffen, GPI, Aigle and so on...

there is only one point that holds everyone from buying MK-V AR - budget,
plus I don't think that steadicam units can be professional or consumer, results are, if your footage is steady - it's professional
