  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Glidecam 4000 Pro footage with Scarlet

Totally agree. Rock it until the wheels fall off Matthew—I'd rather get the shots now. And it looks you're getting them with your impressive body of work, which to me is worth more than the glidecam itself.

rock on. necessity is the mother of... doing whatever to get the shot.

Hey just FYI I have seen a Glidecam 4000 arm snap off under the weight of only an hvx200 with a mattebox. It was a bit chilly that day, maybe between 0c and 8c. The two pins that hold the arm in the vest gave out. It wasn't during a take, an my hand was on the camera top handle at the time, so we didn't lose a camera, but it was pretty crazy.

Obviously we had a faulty unit or something (it was a rental), but still... keep an eye on things and maybe safety your top handle into your shoulder strap or something.

haha....full on! How scary! It must have been damaged or something....but I'll keep that in mind :) I'm only a couple of kg's over, but thanks for the heads up :) Also, when you say it was the Glidecam 4000 arm that snapped....that doesn't make sense entirely, since you can fly a Glidecam 4000 sled with any arm, they are two different things - the Glidecam 4000 doesn't have an arm. Which arm was it? The smooth shooter is considerable slimmer and can take less weight than the X-10, which is what I'm using.

Great looking footage. I've been looking to get some sort of a glidecam for a while, but the price jumps exponentially once you get over the 10lb limit. Better to shoot with what you have, and by the looks of the footage it seems to be working for you.

I don't really know which piece is which, it was the pins on the spring loaded arm that attaches to the vest seen in this setup: http://tinyurl.com/ar7xvt5

We ended up having to handhold that shot while skiing backwards. It worked out though, I think smooth cam had just come out that year for FCP, and the HVX has a pretty decent OIS system... that film won the grand prize at the contest it was for!

Thanks man, yeah...it sucks that the price jumps so far so quickly...but there are (although not for some people) options :)

Wow! That's insane! Was the camera/operator damaged? Nice work with grand prize :)

No, I had a hand on the top handle when it happened. I was checking out the spring tension, but I really didn't apply much force to it before it snapped clean off, leaving the pins in the holes in the vest. Good thing it didn't happen out on the hill during a take.

It was a fun movie, popular among your countrymen: https://vimeo.com/4287266

Man, looking at the gag reel at the end of that movie brings back memories. Pat and Luke and myself got fat and they got bald since we made that movie :( It's only been less than 4 years.... damn... at least I have all my hair.

Matthew, thanks for sharing!!
What's the total weight of the sled with battery 'n all??

pics of the sled pleaseeeeeeee!!!

isn't the glidecam 4000 pro much difficult to balance vs the 4000 HD?
how long does it take to balance the sled properly??

Oh hey, that's you!?
I remember having watched that 'Story About A Boy' film some month ago and loved it! Keep rolling Matthew! :)

I totally loved that "this is a story about a boy..." voiceover thing.

Hey Will,

Yeah it's a pretty cool place to shoot, only done test shoots there so far but it has potential :) As for post stabilizing, I used no such software. There are a couple of tweaks to the scale and rotation that I did by hand on the last shot but that's it. I like to have that control rather than let software screw it up :) I edit useing EDIUS.
