  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Glass at NAB?

I'd like to know if there is any new info on the Zeiss Otus line - I'm hanging out for more focal lengths and hopefully a cine housing.

They were pretty tigh lipped about any cine versions of the Otis. If they are indeed working on them, don't expect them to be cheap.

Cooke has not released any information about the anamorphic zooms except the following:

1) There will be more than one anamorphic zoom; sounds like two

2) They are obviously 2x squeeze

3) They will be front anamorphic elements, meaning the traditional anamorphic look will be apparent in the image

4) They will be in the tradition of past cooke zooms, meaning 5:1 and 10:1 zooms.

The last part is exciting. I can see a 5:1 but will we see a 10:1 anamorphic zoom?!

The following is my speculation... nothing but opinion.

My personal hope: 30-150mm Anamorphic zoom (5:1) T/3.5

30-150mm would be an amazing anamorphic zoom. I don't know I'd even need another! Since Les seemed to hint there would be two zooms in the tradition of a 5:1 and 10:1, I'll guess the other lens is a 50-500, which is basically an anamorphic version of the historically loved 25-250 spherical, if talking about horizontal FoV. But the 30-150mm would be my dream.

I think the wide Ana zoom will be the 5:1 and the other the 10:1, since the wide will be a more challenging design.

Yes. Glass was another big disappointment. I was ready to place an order on the rumored Illumina Anamorphics... :(

Somehow i think that this NAB was a bit less on the glass side, except just a few new lenses? Am I right?

Certainly not as exciting as the last two years, but there were some notable things happening:

The kick is that it's not "anamorphics", but rather an anamorphic 1.3X adapter which can be seen here:

I rather enjoy the Illumina T1.3 primes, but I do sincerely wish they went 2X. Perhaps in the future.

Likely next year we'll see some more interesting glass. There's some interesting stuff in the works. Just not ready for a long while.

Yes please. Trying to find info on the Illumina anamorphics, but nothing online so far...
Not sure if you made it to the Luma Tech booth at NAB, but here is the information available so far re: Illumina Anamorphic Converter for S35 lenses:
The unit is a clamp-on adapter used on 35mm focal length and longer lenses. Its 1.33x squeeze results in a 1-stop light loss (T1.9 from T1.3 lenses, T2.5 from the T1.8 135mm). It will incorporate its own focus mechanism; host lens is set to infinity when using the converter. Working prototype will be shown at IBC Amsterdam in September. Thanks !

Regarding Service Vision - If I remember right, those were not true anamorphics but rather with rear anamorphic elements.

Thanks! Wasn't at NAB so good to know. I was hoping they'd come out with a set of lenses so we don't have the dual focus situation, but maybe this is the first step on that road…?

Just watched the demo video for the Scorpiolens but there is no oval bokeh so there is no real reason to use them unless you want to crop and then up-scale your footage.

Luma Tech showed the following new products at NAB:
-14mm T1.8 compact wide angle lens for 5K/6K
-Uncoated front elements for existing ILLUMINA S35 high speed lenses
-ILLUMINA anamorphic converter for S35 lenses 35mm and longer (1.33x anamorphic squeeze for 16x9 sensors) -Showed non working mockup. Production units expexcted by late August this year.
