  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

GL Optics Test: Re-housed Contax Set

I will try my best:)
Please wait me 2-3 months:)
Because there are many Lens need to re-designed and rehoused now.
Here is 300mm F2.8 stop Prime Lens, just finished yesterday:)

Look Nice! And PL mount... which lens is it?

Does the 'rehousing' of the lens make the focus-turn longer? (don't know the right name for that thing - the distance from nearest end of the focus point to the farest)

You mean the roration? Yes, focus and aperture roration is changed, more longer than original condition.

Nan, if we want, can you change the number of aperture blades in the lens?

Also, are there discounts if our Contax lens is already Leitaxed?

Hey mates, This may be an unintelligent question but I got to ask it:

What do those images that Patrick posted have to do with the lenses? I understand that he shot the images with the lenses and that the cinematography is beautiful there. However, the difference between just any random lens and the Contax lenses he used is - slight color shift, sharpness, etc.

My understanding is that with the reduced resolution of those stills and with a slight amount of color correction, you could get that look with any lens.

It's mostly the cinematography, am I right?

The answer in my opinion, is no. Some of the flaring, bokeh, and low-con highlights seen in Patrick's imagery are distinctly Contax. Of course it's Patrick's artistry that's weilding these characteristics, but the artist is using a TOOL, and to suggest that all TOOLS are alike, I think is taking a leap of faith.

Different lenses do different things. Primes in particular specialize in their imagery, where as Zooms do everything well...but have less quirks.

If you want the magic, you need to find the quirks.

Patrick,
Did you try Duclos cine-mods before going with Nan?

What were the other cinemods you tried?

Not only rehousing
Nan adds more rotation of the focus and iris.

Patrick,

thanks so much for sharing. those stills at the beginning of the thread are so beautiful and it looks like GL did a really nice job--gets me interested in using them someday in the future :)

Pictures of the set look great - I have his 100mm macro and now use it on just about every shoot. Really happy with it. I have a set of RPP's already (18mm all the way through to the 300mm, + two of the zooms) so I don't really need another set of lenses… but these look like a great set of lightweight primes at a decent cost / value proposition. I also light everything so 2.8 is fine.

Got the same email which threw me for a loop, as I had contacted Nan about rehousing my entire Contax lens set to PL, and his reply was he could do it in EF but would no longer do PL mounts on Contax lenses???
