  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

GL Optics Sigma 18-35 Rehoused - Group Buy

This lens has peaked my curiosity and I wanted to get an idea on sample variation and performance consistency.

I've looked at 5 copies of the stock lens and here's the info I can tell you in regards to Dragon. This is mostly an observation as I didn't actually test them on Dragon yet.

- 18mm will porthole at 6K full with the iris closed down, but might be usable wide open. 6K WS will vignette closed down, but is usable wide open.
- 20mm usable with vignette at 6K, 6K WS covers fine.
- 24mm-35mm covers just fine.

This was all tested without the sun hood.

Those are quick preview notes.

What's important for me is if it will cover 6k HD... Any guesses?

Phil.. you are getting pretty good at this. spot on.

Finally got a bunch of them in today. First thing you need to do is loose the janky hood..

6K HD fine. 6K full goes away about 20mm.

Should have it characterized very soon.

Awesome!

So here you are, testing away :)

Did you find significant differences (or any at all) between the 5 copies?

EDIT: and thank you again for your sharing your wealth of knowledge - as you did this morning, too!

Some people asked me about when the deposit is due...

Nan from GL optics will send out a paypal invoice to everyone who opted for the 700 USD deposit next week. The balance is due on September 16th (you will get a second invoice then).

Invoiced received and paid!

Did I beat Jarred to the punch? ;-)

Mike

Invoice received, but why $728?
Why do buyer has to pay Paypal charges (seriously)?
All I know is following;

1- GL optics will send you an invoice on Paypal after September 15th. The price depends on the number of ordered lenses. Shipment (80USD) is included in the price:

2- There's also the option of a non-refundable deposit of 700USD.

If buyer has to for Paypal fee then price will be;

00-25 units = 3411.20 USD per lens (NOT 3280 USD per lens)
25-50 units = 3203.20 USD per lens (NOT 3080 USD per lens)
>50 units = 2995.20 USD per lens (NOT 2880 USD per lens

Am I missing something?

Heh... sorry Mike... I was all over this and sent Nan my deposit on the 15th.

</Glass Junky>

You bastard! :-)

If I had had my invoice on the 15th I'd have paid on the 15th!

I only got my invoice this morning and paid within 60 seconds *grumble*.

Mike

Semi-OT but curious: does anyone know of an equivalent or faster (i.e. f/1.8) 18mm *prime*???

All the usual cine lenses that are 18/1.3 excepted, obviously!

Strange if the fastest mass-produced 18mm is the wide end of a zoom… but I think it may be true...

Sorry, there was a misunderstanding between Nan and me (we're both obviously not native English speakers). Nan thought, that it's normal that the buyer pays the paypal fee, since he's mostly profiting from their buyer protection. Anyway, Nan and I are really sorry about it. He will count the payment of $728 not as a $700 deposit, but as a full $728 deposit, and the final price incl. paypal will stay as originally announced ($2880, $3080, ...)

Cheers
David

Thanks David

Payement sent

I think Nan is turning out to be a real "stand-up" guy. Nice to see in this generally dog-eat-dog world. :thumbup:
