  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

GL Optics 70-200mm & 11-16mm

No, i asked Nan if this could be done and he said it was not possible.

Why wouldn't it? That seems weird. Don't need IS so that shouldn't be an issue.

Matt

if I remember the MkII 70-200 has different glass all together with better Digital Coating, minimum focus, larger zoom ring, Fatser Auto-Focus and improved IS from the MkI IS and Non-IS

My dad had a Non-IS 70-200 I should have cop'd it when i had the chance, but he gave it to his assistant when I gained interest. Either way $6k for a zoom like this one is not bad I really want it but now it's the question of do i want a MkII or a GL first. MkII was released in 2010 so we could see a revision down the line the only other option is the Compact Zooms which are over double the price.

yeah I know the differences in build and optical quality, I'm just wondering why Nan can't convert it into a pl mount version like the mkI. I don't need auto focus, IS, etc, since it's for cinema, so I don't understand why it would be so difficult to do a conversion like the MKI. The MKII is sharp as hell and would be great to have cinevised and pl mounted. I just wish he would rehouse the MKII and I'd buy one immediately. I don't want the softer, older MKI.

Yeah I don't want the overpriced Zeiss version either. Ridiculous if you ask me...

more glass thats why...

Zeiss is not ridiculous in my opinion it's great glass, has FF coverage and is mount swappable but for that you have to pay.

But Nan is just rehousing the lenses... He shouldn't have to touch the optics. So what would more glass matter? If he is literally just building a housing around the lens, then the optics and glass shouldn't matter.

Zeiss lens is ridiculous for the price when it's just a rehoused stills lens. Thats what I mean by ridiculous.

Matt, unless you fully understand the work that goes into converting optics i would assume there is a good reason for it. For the money if the lens holds up, i'm sure it's a good purchase. I am still considering buying one. Let me tell you what Nan said in his own words.

"It's Canon 70-200 NON-IS version. please looks the attachment.
I re-designed the Lens focus system-longer roration focus compare to the original condition.
I re-designed the aperture system-now it's 100% manual blades control.
After rehouse, the focus point is fixed when you zoom Lens from 70mm to 200mm."

and when i asked him to do the work on a MKII lens

"no, it's no possible to rehouse."

Lens re-housing isn't easy, if so everyone would be doing it. Besides Duclos and Russian converted Tokina lens, G.L. is the only company that has made progress with a 70-200 that's reasonably priced and on the market for purchase.

only other mods we've seen in the past has been from Duclos the 80-200 which I think got discontinued? And their rehoused 70-200; not sure if it will even be available for retail, the video below was from 2011. These are all Nikon cause Matt wasn't satisfied with the Canon glass.

Plus if you have CP.2 the 114mm front end will be an easy lens swap for your 1stAC since they all match. The Zeiss Compact Zooms are nice cause it'll work well with the LockCirclePrimes and the GL 11-16 all 95mm.

You don't know that, so I wouldn't assume. I don't see a ZE/ZM offering of a Zeiss 70-200 so you can't dismiss the cine version as just a "rehoused stills lens".

The prototype of the Nikon 70-200 got stolen in a shop raid a few years back, not sure if Duclos scratched the idea out completely though, but it was difficult for him to produce another lens without the prototype.

The Zeiss is not a rehoused stills lens. For the quality of the lens and the focal length/ speed / size . It's very good value.

The zeiss should not have zoom focus shift issues that still zooms tend to have. At least for that price it shouldn't have ;)

You don't have to be a genius to figure that after rehousing the ZFs- ZE lenses and calling them CPs -and with the commercial success it was they went the same route for the zoom. And ZFs used to be called Cosinas. not that here is anything wrong with either-in fact the commercial success speaks for itself.
I'm sure 24-70 is next. Let's just be honest here and call spade the spade...;)

I'm sure 24-70 is next

I am Confused by the worst predication ever;-) They have already shown the 28-80!! And even a quick look at it will show you it is not a simple rehouse...

Jacek if I didn't know better I might think you had a commercial interest in us not buying traditional PL glass? ;-)

You're comparing a $20,000 cine lens made by Zeiss to a consumer grade zoom made by Minolta? And this amazon link is your proof?

Not proof Shervin. It's a zeiss glass lens, is 70-200, and Zeiss has proven their CP line by rehousing ZF/ZE lenses and calling them cinema lenses. The fact that they are calling it a Compact Zoom mens it's most likely a rehoused lens... Plus the new Compact Zoom is the same shape and size as this lens and also covers Full Frame. Do a little research yourself...

Sorry, posting up a rendering of a Zeiss lens from photorumours in 2009 isn't your proof. Neither is the assumption of Zeiss's track record of rehousing ZE/ZF glass to CP any proof either... since this new zoom is actually not part of that lineup.

I'm pretty sure I did my research... and the maker of that zoom Sony makes is Minolta (They make all the glass of the Alpha series that isn't made by Carl Zeiss). This doesn't validate that Zeiss's offering is stills glass...
