  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Raven looks awesome. High Fives all around.

The only aspect that may concern some is the reduced FOV

BUT BUT BUT... RED has the Power to innovate!


Make a special focal reducer, much akin to metabones speed booster products (but way better).

It would connect to the canon mount and feed the electrical contacts to another canon mount.
And inside you'd have lenses to correct for focus/flange issues and increase the FOV.

This would also boost in a 1/3 to 1 full stop of additional light gathering!!!

Making the RED EYE work w/ all RED canon mounts would be a huge boon too!
(I appreciate some lenses w/ protruding end bits wouldn't work)
 
These speedboosters generally wouldn't be able to work in the RED DSMC/DSCM2 system, as (by and large) there isn't enough room - which is why they're more commonly found in shorter, MIRRORLESS optimized systems.

I'm just spitballing here...
...and i imagine if possible the engineering dollar may result in a product that costs more then the raven itself

although, I'm curious if a combo of mount mod to MFT then focal reduced back up from 35mm stills glass might work.
perhaps with a corrective front diopter
 
Red scarlet weapon, coming in the near future! Raven is what it is, a badass camera. No matter what they made it people would still say I wish it had this and that.
 
The reason that speedboosters can exist is because the flange distance for a mirrorless mount system (mFT, E-Mount, etc.) is shorter than a mount designed for a mirror (F-Mount, EF Mount, etc.). Because there's an EF-Mount already on the Raven, there's no room to have more elements between the sensor and the lens.

Just relax guys; Raven is going to look amazing even with a slightly smaller sensor.
 
I'm not sure if there's an EF to PL mount, but if there is, people seem to miss the fact that many of the lenses that don't cover full frame and has been reduced in price because of that will be perfect for this camera.

But I think that people will never be satisfied. If you want a larger sensor, buy the Epic Dragon.
 
I'm quite happy w/ my Epic Dragon... basically i was comparing FOV reductions from 6K to 4K and then just brainstormed a little...

Although, thinking about it more, slapping on a 2X anamorphic might be golden territory for Raven.
 
To all people saying it isn't possible because of flange depth, can you chime in and tell me why a teleconverter from EF mount to EF mount is possible but a focal reducer isn't?
It's because focal reducer is opposite of extender. Extender adds to back focus, increases the focal length and takes away speed. Focal reducer subtracts the back focus, decreases the FL and adds speed
 
I never understood why Red put the sensor so far into the brain. Imagine how cool it would be if the sensor was more flush to the front of the camera and then the gate/cavity flange distance was more part of the swappable mounts. Then we could have speed boosters on the weapon 8k :)

Then one considers making a different lens mount with a shorter flange distance, greatly increasing the potential of the imaging device(s).

I agree with you, making the flange distance even more part of the swappable mounts would have been great. To RED's defense, they designed the whole thing in a time when E-mount wasn't there and lenses for mirrorless not that interesting. When did the first speedbooster pop up? I don't know, but i think it wasn't before EPIC/Scarlet.

Maybe we see something with the introduction of the next sensor-generation, who knows.

And the thing you are suggesting is actually doable. Making a focal reducer for 8k-Weapon means you want to adapt Medium Format-glass, nothing else would make sense. ;) And hey, that stuff has a larger focal flange distance than Canon. So here is space to put some optics between camera and lens.

I would love to see that happening, maybe different versions, or one with swappable optics, for different targets (VV, FF35, 6k, S35, APS-C, RAVEN!).

I'm always playing with the idea to get some MF-glass, just in case. :)

I believe that the flange adjustment mechanism needed that space. I vaguely recall Jarreds explanation

Oh my god, I could use my hasselblad old lens and Mamiya 645 with speed booster! my 80mm 1.9 will become 40mm 0.95!!!!!!!!!
