Hello,

Just finished shooting my first feature. Getting ready for post. Small indie feature. Just a few of us for post with some experience. Still learning. I just wanted to run by some info I've been reading to make sure I'm understanding it correctly. My colorist just setup his work station. He's using resolve lite, 2 HD monitors, 1 4k monitor. This is my workflow which has been told to me by various people...

Footage shot on Red Epic 5k (2.4:1 with anamorphic lenses and 16X9 with Canon L series) and Canon XA-20 HD (16X9)

In Resolve add your Red footage to the media pool.
Render the clips in Resolve to DNxHD 36 (Target folder can be an "Avid media Drive"\Avid MediaFiles\MXF\1
Export an AAF from Resolve with Round trip to Avid settings
In Avid open the Resolve AAF in a bin and your media clips will populate the bin and be online (If you rendered to a valid Avid MediaFiles\MXF\1 folder)
All my HD footage would then be imported as 175x (If there will be VFX added to this footage is 175x the best selection when exporting?) I know I can AMA this footage but hopefully my new mac pro will be able to handle the HD footage.

When you have finished the edit export an AAF from MC.
Open in the original Resolve session and Resolve re links your AAF timeline to the original Red files.
For the VFX shots you can export an AAF of those shots from Avid, bring that AAF back to Resolve and render your original footage files into 2K files for After Effects.
Sometime in the next 6 weeks Resolve 10 is scheduled to be released and it is supposed to have enough editing ability to be able to cut your 2K VFX shots back into your MC cut AAF timeline.

Does this sound correct with a 2k master in mind?

Now for my concerns. As I mentioned my colorist is using resolve lite 10. He brought in the footage the other day just so I could take a look. He unsqueezed the 2.4:1 anamorphic footage but on his 16x9 4k monitor it filled the screen. It shouldn't. We shouldn't have to put a 2.4:1 mask on it. When I started researching the conclusion I've come up with is resolve lite is making the footage HD because it won't handle 5k... only the full version does. Correct? So if we stick with the lite version I am only dealing with HD? So when my VFX team wants the color corrected 5k footage to work with, that is not possible using resolve lite?

You can work with 5K in Lite, you just cannot output anything higher than 1920x1080 and timelines will cut off at that size as well. That means your 2K finish is out unless you spring for a resolve license.

I've never had issues using anamorphic material in resolve like that before, even with R3D sourced. Make sure your sequence settings are correct for the type of material you're using. I do remember having some kind of issue with anamorphics and spherical material mixed on a timeline before, I can't recall the nature of the issue now though.

So I can't give the VFX team any color corrected 5k material? Only 1920x1080? How else could they work with the original files? Obviously they want the 5k material, is the solution buying the full version of resolve? I just think it would be a waste to work with HD footage when you shot 5K. I know film festivals usually just have HDCAM submissions, so if I did a 1920X1080 out of resolve, how do I go about making sure everything is 5k and just down rez the material to HD at the end? Thanks!

Two things.
First, the Resolve Lite 10 can output quad HD resolution. The HD resolution limitation had been removed from V10. The only difference size-wise between full and Lite version is the Lite version can't do a true 4k output, unlike the full version. And that has nothing to do with the wrong sizing. See the next point:-)
Second, if you shot anamorphic, then you need to tell Resolve, that the material is anamorphic by selecting clip attributes and selecting anamorphic, then your image will come in correctly. There are cople of other sizing considerations, but, honestly, your colorist must know all this already...

Listen to Jake . . . he is the Post Man

Correct me if I am wrong here someone, but when generating your DNxHD36 dailies, your going to want to have Resolve add reel names into the metadata of your clips. If you simply drop your R3D files into your mediapool, the reel name info column will be blank.
In the conform options menu, turn on "assist using reel names from the:" and then select "source clip filename". Do this before you create your timeline. Then when you do your final conform, make sure to match these conform options in your new project.
Should help with the conform.
