I'm going to be filming (time-lapse) a night-time sequence exterior at an old two story house in the ghost town of Animas Forks next week and will lighting one floor from within with an LED panel tucked in a corner so that only the lighting f/x illuminates the interior.

This film is set in the 1850's so it needs to simulate gas or candle light. Can anybody recommend a color effect GEL that would suit this practical shot?

The shot I'm going for will be very similar to this example

You will need a 15-20 second exposure to get the astrophotography part of your inspiration photo. I think all RED cameras only go to 1fps for 1 second. You will need a DSLR or low light camera to capture the movement of the Milky Way. If you do this, the interior lighting will have to be ridiculously low, like barely visible. If you want movement, the Shoot-Move-Shoot sliders are nice. The Astrophotography facebook groups have painfully gorgeous images like this.

Actually I would composite that.

Shoot the house in real time - so you can have real flame flicker and perfect exposure, without care about the stars.
Than shoot your timelapse with optimized exposure for the sky.
Bolt it together in Aftereffects, or whatever you use.

+1 good advice from Frank.

Hi

I would use a Arri Skypanel S60 with chimera and setup the candle FX as needed...

Cheers!

I too would use the candle effect on the SkyPanel, Both the s60 and the s30 would be ideal for this.

A bit more info on scene intent required to make specific suggestions but here go:

Time lapse with a Sony A7 or Canon 1Dx class cam
Live footage (if any) with Gemini
Composite in DVR or AE using Blending layers and simple masks (google "sky replacement")
Keep the scene easy to mask for less post work. Like minimal tree leaves blowing in the wind along the mask line

For lighting that small - a flashlight with CTO would work. Since you're shooting RAW and there's little else in the scene then it easy to change WB if necessary

If this is just a static long exposure shot, then a Sony A7 with a candle in the house and done. You could be inside light painting what you want if a static shot. I've done this a bunch of times. Leave cam shutter open for like a minute and paint what you want. Using a CamRanger with an iPad (for Canon or Nikon cameras - sadly, no makie for Sony) allows you to see the result remotely then make adjustments as needed then remote trigger the camera again.

Not sure this is an good application for RED as the scene is described in OP

Sony A7R III
No composites
No trees in the shot. Only mountains
Camera will be mounted on a Dynamic Perception slider for a subtle move-in
"Candle" light will be spilling from a side window for the most part. Will be using a Fog 1 filter to lend the spill some "glow."

Any foreground elements for parallax? If not, then screw the slider. Push in via Post Zoom instead. You can add Glow to taste in Post via plug-in. Use candles to get a flicker then do the rest in post if there is no Live Action in the scene. Seems like a straight DSLR time lapse project.

Post glow was added to this clip:

All motion done in Post on this:

Hello Zeb. There are foreground items like overgrown brush and some old mining equipment that will lend movement nicely. The tests I have done with the Fog 1 and various Promist produce similar results but I worry about how they might soften the starlight. The rind of the crescent moon will also be setting in the shot which may produce interesting results with the diffusion. Perhaps the post softening will lend me better control with the elements that should only have the desired blooming effect. I pushed the date to Monday the 13, so I have time to play around and test some more.
