  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

GearNex first geared head off the production line

A piece of equipment like this cannot be judged well from a camera phone pic. Wait until NAB.

Jay

Thank you Jay, we agree. I was torn on putting the pic up but thought people deserve to see it's almost done.

Does it have multiple speeds and pan / tilt brakes ? I've come close to buying a technovision or mini-mitchell heads for similar or more $$, several times.

Love the idea, totally taken by surprise. I hope you did it right ! I must say the ergonomics look strange in the pix - pan wheel seems too far forward.

Yes, it has 2 speeds for pan and tilt plus a neutral for the pan mode. Also, the 4" and 6" optional hand wheels can adjust for different speeds. There is a brake and it is with a ratchet design for easier use. More specs are available at www.GearNex.com

Glad you love the idea and we think we have done it right. As for the ergonomics, it only appears that way because it is designed for todays digital cameras and is smaller then an Arrihead designed for large film cameras. Plus we put on the 6" wheels to check clearances in the picture, the 4" and 5" look much more pleasing to the eye.

we did run a set of grey for an idea of what it would look like, if you want Jean Luc, I can send you a picture of it and if you like it just include those for you.

Thank you very much ! I think grey will be perfect.
I am now very happy, just waiting for the animal to be in my hands !
(With a strong case to protect it )

Good timing on this--may be changing some of my plans. Do a good job with it (looks like it, but make sure)!

+/- 32 degrees is very limiting limiting.
Kind like the clearence issues with the old mitchell heads.
Pretty but usless.

Thank you and we are planning on it.

Heheh, busted.

This is a pretty interesting looking head... I wish I could check one out, but I won't be going to NAB. Any way to see one in LA?

We are making arrangements to be at SOC's BBQ and Cinegear in LA. Just a heads up, not sure if we will have the same preorder price then which will depend on the demand at NAB among some other factors.

Hi again,

So these are actually gear driven? My understanding was that the reason they stopped using gears and went to belts/cables, was because the center of the tilt range gets a lot more wear than the extremes. So after a few years of use the gear is worn in the center and not the ends, creating either slop in the middle, or if adjusted, too tight at the ends. How did you guys work around that issue?

Again, it's a really great idea to have a gear head sized to the newer smaller cameras, ACs around the world will rejoice (well I guess grips move the tripod in the EU so grips as well).

Can't wait to check this out,

Nick

Thanks for the question Nick.
Yes, we believe we have solved the issue but we are unable to answer how only because of proprietary information and patent pending issues.

Which booth at NAB?

We will be in the AJA booth #SL2513 for the show and in the Silverado Systems area at the RedUsers Party on Wednesday located at the Rio. Hope to see you there.

So there's one brake for pan and tilt simultaneously? Or are there two separate brakes?

There are two tension brakes on the pan, one on the left side and one on the right.

Then the tilt lock is a ratchet design which is capable of a full lock mode.

I heard it's possible to set hard stops on certain geared heads. Is that possible on the GearNex unit?

GearNex servo option ?

GearNex servo option ?

To answer your question Alex, I may need more clarification due to the lack of sleep due to getting ready for NAB. If you are asking can the geared head make a hard stop by operator input, yes. It can also make a feathered stop.

But if your question is if it will stop before completing a 360 degree pan, it will not, it can continue around as many times as the operator chooses too until they stop.

If you are asking if it can stop like a servo driven unit, then it would be based on the operators skill level and the speed of the pan.

On that note, I received a call today from a well known trade vendor who does such type servo units for geared heads and we will be discussing the possibility of adding such a servo unit to the GearNex in the near future.

Hope that answered your question.
