I've noticed a problem with our Red One camera. The 720P playback and all of the QT Proxy files are fuzzy (from the lowest res up to the highest). I can frame up an image, and in the viewfinder and all the monitors it looks sharp and crisp. The image looks magnificent even when I'm recording, but upon playback the image is noticeably fuzzier. I was hoping that this was just a playback issue, but after looking at all of the proxy files, I noticed the same problem. This is not a lens issue and I've tested most the formats ranging from 2K 2:1 to 4k 2:1. I've also used an array of both 35mm format lenses and 16mm format lenses ranging from Zeiss to the Red lenses.

Please help... Not sure if I need to send the camera back to Red or not.

Does the footage look "missed focus" fuzzy? What do the images look like at full res in REDCINE-X? What shutter speed? Handheld? Need more info.

I'm not sure what to say to the QT Proxy's being fuzzy but as for the in camera playback fuzzyness. In-camera playback always looks fuzzy because of the lack of proper computing power to provide a high quality image upon playback. The camera can't do a realtime full debayer and all the other things it needs to do to give you the real image.

I found it's most noticeable when playing back 2k footage. I would not be too concerned about it, look at the R3D files, which are the ones you will be using for the final product. Those will be properly sharp and that is what really matters. If you want to judge focus for a shot you have to be looking at the monitor during the shot, if it's sharp there then you don't have to worry.

Thanks for the help guys... I jumped the gun about the quicktime proxies (they're fine). It's just the playback. The explanation above is extremley helpful. Thanks again.

Playback on camera or playback in redcinex?

Playback on camera... kind of a bummer that you can't rely on it to check focus. Still a great camera though.

I had a director complain to me about 'fuzzy' playback from the camera.
If you're unsure load your R3D file into REDAlert and step thru it frame by frame.
This will most likely answer any doubts of focus/fuzziness.

Shortly after the take. I brought my laptop up to the director and showed him frame by frame. He understood.
