So I am interested in the future of the Red one now that scarlett and epic are coming... Do you think the price will drop? The camera will be discontinued? There will be a large market of used Red's being sold on Ebay?

I do not own a RED yet... just trying to see what people think will be the future of this camera... I do not have enough money to buy an Epic.. but think the Scarlett may be too low end... a MX enabled RedOne for around $15k sounds great?

Your thoughts?

Sounds like you are a candidate for a used MX RED ONE, if they become available at the release of EPIC... or an S35 Scarlet at $7K-ish.

Yeah... sounds good... when do you think this will be?

Red will be selling these direct to the public?

Any idea on price?

Will Red be selling these directly?

If we get trade-ins of the M-X sensor R1, we will refurbish to new specs and re-sell. Don't ask the price... not sure yet.

Jim

15K for used (but in great condition) R1 M-X is too low considering the price of the sensor upgrade. More like 19K or 20K I'd think.

At 20K I'd rather just buy a new R1 with the sensor upgrade for 23K, it may be difficult or very costly to get insured otherwise. I've put my project in stasis because now I don't want to film it with anything less than a RED product, but as a non-R1 owner yet long time forum browser with a limited budget I've accepted it may be quite a long wait before I can order a Scarlet 2/3rds but I'd definately be interested in a recon R1 that's been back through Red's hands

remember.. that 15k is for the body alone...
Im already 20k in all the other stuff (not including lenses)... so 35k for a used red package, with no lenses...
then another 20k for lenses.

so 55k for a used complete red package

If you really hope to sell your used R1 MX for $15k then your window of opportunity is only open from now until the Scarlet S35 becomes available. Anything after that point seems unreasonable, given the currently anticipated Scarlet pricing scheme. Don't you think?

Whatever happens, I'm sure Jim will price the S35s in a way that reasonably protects the value of your R1MX, keeping in mind it's age, and realtive value.

That's a good point. The question is, how much will it cost to get s35 Scarlet up to the capacity of Red M-X? You'd need the I/O module, the recording module...anything else? Whatever the cost of those three together, Red will probably be worth less. The only advantage could be overcranking, but Red can only overcrank in 3k and 2k modes.

I suspect that is why they eluded to the possibility that the overcranking feature was dissapearing from the Mysterium Scarlets. I hope that doesn't happen, but we'll have to wait and see. I'm sure they will finesse the features:price ratio until the used R1MX's fit into the new landscape.

Wow, this is such a clever business plan, re-selling the refurbished M-X REDs... Trade in at 17,500 yes, but they can offer a refurbished M-X RED for 17,500 or a NEW RED with M-X for 17,500 plus 5750.

If it works out they will be able to cash the trade-in back almost instantly... so the trade-in actually helps RED and the customers. How great is that? World peace!

I'm planning on hanging onto my RED M-X for a while after Epic 5K comes out. But I'm sure I'll sell it one of these days. Maybe when FF35 Epic comes out. Only time will tell.

I could see holding onto it until the wheels fall off. I think it'd always be worth more to me as a B-cam or backup then on the used market. I used to not think this way, but M-X changed that.

Another thing that could help keep the Red prices high is cheap maintenance (repair fees). I've never sent my Red in for non-warranty covered repairs, but reports vary. We don't yet know at what point in time components simply wear out. My laptops pretty much fall to pieces for 10 different reasons around the 3-4 year mark, you'd have to replace almost every element to keep them going. Hopefully that's not the case with Red and we can get another 5 years (beyond the 2 already) without significant component replacement.

Exactly what I am thinking too, My M-X RED will be good to go for many many many years.

Using the RED One as a B-camera to Epic is a good idea. Not to mention as a backup camera just incase something happens to your Epic or it has to be sent in for an upgrade on the brain. And yes, M-X has changed the way I see my RED now after I get Epic.

Well, let's see...

Scarlet S35 brain - $7,000
Scarlet module adapter - $300
Base I/O module - $1,750
Side CF module - $500
REDmote - $550
Battery module (w/2 batteries) - $1,250
TOTAL = $11,350

RED ONE body - $17,500
CF module - $500
MX sensor upgrade - $5,750
TOTAL = $23,750

That means that the RED ONE MX is $12,400 more expensive than a comparably set up S35 Scarlet (which includes 2 batteries). They'd have to sell refurbished RED ONE MX cameras for veeeerrrrrry cheap to convince a new buyer to get the R1 over the S35 Scarlet, since the Scarlet beats the R1 in almost every category.

Interesting.
