  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Other people have started "future firmware wishes" threads. They've contained a lot of really good suggestions completely buried and drowned out by constant, repetitive requests for higher framerates.

So I decided we should have a slightly less optimistic / more realistic thread so Red can see what we need without having to skim through a zillion "5K 24fps" posts.

Mine:

1.) power management, but I think this has already been confirmed for 4.0

2.) Flash sync. I list this before stills mode because strobes can recycle fast enough for 1fps "motion" shooting, making flash sync useful even without a real stills mode.

3.) Stills mode. ACR/Lightroom support PLEASE (Redcine is way better than it used to be but it ain't ACR/Lightroom). My "dream" request would be that stills mode have a faster boot up time because it didn't need to run all of the hardware, or run it at full capacity.

4.) "Burst" (RAM buffer).

The Epic has been out for a while. If it still can't fire a strobe or take one still frame at a time of the operator's button push...then i don't think it can reasonably be called a DSMC. Either make it a DSMC or just call it a hi-rez video camera. I really don't understand why there aren't timelapse intervals longer than one second...unless its just business - withholding until the next paid upgrade??

ramping
high fps bursts
prerecord
time lapse
stop motion record
long exposure

... did I mention power management?

Ok, we know power management should be coming, but nonetheless these are things I'm hoping for.

I'd love to have a stop motion mode, where you start a clip and with each press of a button a new frame is added to that clip.

Don't know if that's what was enabled with the R1

Oh and to continue my spamming, here's what Jarred announced for Build 4 which already includes lots of what has been mentioned, for the sake of keeping this thread in the correct direction :)

Build 4 is the big one coming.. December sometime.

Power Management,
1:1 joystick zoom,
long exposures,
timelapse,
pre-record and
ramping

are just some of the highlights... which also includes your image flip Will :)

For some people.. this is one of those builds that will be like a new camera all over again....

Constant Blackshading=BS

Constant Blackshading=BS

My camera works in a place that has 10 of the worldʻs 14 climate zones within one hour of my house, from desert to arctic.
So, I wish for more elegant black shading controls so I can stop carrying extra batteries in case the shoot location does not match my BS.
As it stands, the black shading I perform in my office almost never matches the conditions I experience in the field, so I often end up with hot pixels and noise which does not show up on the LCD during the shoot.

At least a few more User BS settings, and the ability to name them. (10 would be nice LOL)
LCD indicator when the sensor temp or camera settings do not match the currently selected BS
Fan control option that will force the camera to maintain the sensor temp used in the currently selected BS
Fan control that will maintain user selected temp during the BS operation.

Ability to modify looks on evf (counteracting milky blacks of lcos bomb) without modifying r3d metadata
Ability to have RLF/RC3 on SDI while monitoring RG3/RC3

I'd like to see 5K WS added to Scarlet, and 4K WS & 3K WS added to both. Wastes a lot of space recording vertical pixels you know you won't use. Also, despite the title of the thread, that might give us a handful more fps.

Martin is TRULY on the right track here!

Longer exposure times. (would be awesome for time-lapses)

Faster blackshading. (This is a must have upgrade! This operation takes longer on our cameras than ANY OTHER camera on the market. Clients don't have the patience to wait on this.)

1:1 Pixel zoom during record and playback. (who wouldn't want that?!?!?)

Support for the Redmote Pro. ;)

Ability to see sound levels while making adjustments. (all of my sound mixers would be very happy!)

I'd like to add a few things too:

"Picture Cache" (some call it pre-record) (The Sony's and Panasonic's have this and it can be a lifesaver in documentary and sports style shooting! I love shooting sports with this and only hitting the record button AFTER the play is over, if it was good enough to record!)

Playback and LIVE camera overlays! (Sony calls this "Freeze Mix". It's VERY helpful when doing inserts or pickups... to see EXACTLY how something was done and therefore can be matched exactly!)

frame record speed ramping

Some of these things would really help the Epic compete on multiple platforms with multiple cameras! You could truly use a single camera for EVERY production!

Not to trying to be a smart a**, but here is my very "realistic" list:

- 5K-WS (this is not 5K full frame just to be clear) @ 24P. If 5K-WS is too much for the ASIC to handle, then 4.75K-WS or even 4.5K-WS @ 24P...
- proper still mode (pushing button takes only single-frame R3D)
- still functions to go along with the still mode (time-lapse, longer exposures, etc...)
- pre-roll (10~30 sec)
- button-triggered frame-rate ramping and focus ramping from preset A to preset B to last XX:XX second

Peter

EDIT: Do You mind explaining why higher frame-rates of smaller screen areas are not "realistic"? RED ONE got it. Epic go it. Why is it so "unrealistic" for Scarlet? I am really curious...

Reduce lag when going from menu to menu.

I'm shooting my film at aspect ratio 2.2, so 4752 by 2160 @ 24p would be a huge help on matched shots (on the same focal length) between the epic and the scarlets.
