Hello Everyone,
I’m new to the group and to my Red Komodo. So please bare with me.

I have a set of Red Pro Prime Lenses. I’m wondering do/will they shoot Full Frame footage? I know that you can shoot Full Frame with Canon EF lenses using an adapter.

I’ve seen an adapter by Metabones on B&H.

Even with this I’m still wondering if I can shoot full frame or not?

Thank you for any help, I greatly appreciate it.

You would use what is called an Expander, I believe a 1.6X or 1.7X is ideal for these primes for VV and FF35 use, but I honestly haven't tested it.

Reducers, or Speed Boosters, shrink the projected image to S35 for instance and you increase the light gathering. Expanders are the other way around and you lose light.

Next time around a set, I'll bring my Tokina 1.6X Expander with me to see if it fits the adapter but also projects the appropriate image circle.

Thank you for the info! Any ideas where an Expander is online? I’d love to learn more about it.

Duclos Lenses has an entire catalog of most of the available ones on the market:

I made a short piece with Fujinon back when larger formats were becoming a bit more available with a lot of good information in it:

Covers some best practices and what to expect when working with these.

The very, very important factor is to ensure the lenses you are expanding "fit" into the expander without hitting anything. Most of them come with some sort of measurement tool. If you have a caliper handy that will let you know what you need to know.

Hello Again Phil,
Thank you for the info sir. My buddy Justin actually works at Duclos. He said he doesn’t know for sure about Red Pro Prime Lenses being Full Frame or not. I asked him to find some information about the Expander they have. Perhaps I can get some more info and even test it someday.

If I was a guessing man, you'll want a 1.6X Expander to make them cover a full frame or VV sensor. I mainly know this because they covered Dragon at 5K nicely and 1.6X is the right ratio to expand outwards from S35 to VV for that coverage.

Last time I did coverage on the RED Pro Primes was years ago, but this is the info:

The real question is if the lenses fit the expander.

My buddy at Duclose says their Expander likely won’t fit. Something about the space at the rear of the lens. I guess I’m not going to be able to have Full Frame with the Komodo after all!! Man that is very disappointing!!
