  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Looks nice from my eyes. Avoid iMovie like the plague, and I can see where they are referencing some of the UI from, but its handling of effects, video placement on the timeline and automatic rendering is a bonafide plus for me. I think what they are trying to do is take away tasks that seem like a workflow, but are actually consuming for the creative process. Editing itself, for many years, has been seen as a technical and creative pursuit. Maybe there aim is to unlock more of the creative whilst leaving the mechanics to the system itself.

For me, it is the intelligent use of the processors and a natural evolution for a system which has been growing for years. Apple's ultimate aim is to make their product line seamless, and i believe, with this addition, they are taking this a step closer.

The purity of a product line is something which i also see RED aiming for. Ask a digi filmaker about RED cameras and they immediately talk of everything from the RED 1, Epic through to Scarlet. Try doing that with Arri.

And let's not even get into home many different versions of Windows 7 there are.....

I liked some of the magnetic timeline features, but at the same time i like to use audio fx per track, so i don't know how is that possible in that way. Some things were really missing in FCP and they catch up in a clever and visual way. Auditioning is really new in that way, that is for me the cooler feature of the whole demo.

As for file formats, i don't know, everything was prores or h264, so we still don't know if it is format agnostic, or framerate agnostic without transcoding on ingest. I am used to import and use.

The other thing that creeped me out was the part that they applied primary and secondary color fx to a gopro file, the fx was really cool, but the rendering bar seemed frozen, it was slow, again, it is a beta, everything will improve, but that rendering on a gopro clip was really long, i don't want to see that on an r3d.

The 4k limit is not cool for 4.5k or even epic, but that will change in future updates i guess.

The lightpeak introduction is a step away from big macpros, for me, it is kinda the way of letting macbooks and imacs plug some cards like rocket or raid cards in an external way, it won't happen now, but it will happen sometime.

Back to fcpx, we still know very little. we know it is cheap, and that is good.

I am not sure why people are worried about format support/compatibility. This is probably one of the most trivial aspects in building an application like this. Workflow is a much more difficult challenge. Apple worked very closely with RED when everyone else was still skeptical. If you are worried the best thing you can do is let Apple know that you want R3D support. But you should probably wait until they have showcased more than a teaser...

Very good point. Apple has even been very open about listening to wants and concerns from pro users. In general I'd say we've been pretty well taken care of.

The concern over RED support does seem extremely silly. They worked closely with RED early on, I really don't see it being a problem.

THX for sharing my video ...
I think Apple is working hard to gives us a great new software with R3D real time editing and a lot of smarts new functionality

Im sure not adding certain clips to the group would allow you to appl audio fx per track. its a price to pay for simplicity.
