  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Fujinon 19-90 T2.9 S35 Cine/ENG lens...

This lens breaks new ground in so many areas. Can't afford it but man what a killer concept. I'm really surprised that this is physically possible given the weight of ANY other lens with similar focal length. Seems almost too good to be true. Hope to see more of the same from others.

I have been wondering for years where this lens was. Those of us who made livings with beta cams and HDcams worked with really good B4 lenses with integrated zooms. I've owned a couple Fujinons over the years. The technology is there. Fujinon finally adapted it for a PL lens. More, please. I want one for a Canon 30-300.

It will have to be tested but my guess is there will be some tradeoffs for the size, weight and speed of this lens. My guess is sharpnes will be great but distortion and breathing will probably be more in the ENG vein than cinema. Very curious to test it though.

I am really looking forward to checking this lens out as well. I am so impressed with two of the other Fujinon zooms I got to use this year. The 24-180 and the 75-400. Just stunning glass. I am sure this won't disappoint.

Yes, that's what I think will be the case. Even the very good Ang. 16-42, or 15-40 for that matter, show a distinct barrel distortion on the wide end. Fujinons Allura zooms are superb glass but they come in the classic 35mm form factor. The 19-90 light weight zoom must be different. A zoom factor of 4.7, a comparable wide starting point at 19mm, the small form factor let me believe that Fujinon build this lens right on the edge. I would be very surprised not to see classic trade-off Evin mentioned above.

BTW, the Fujinon 19-90 just got competition: http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?76914-Servo-For-Angenieux-Zooms

Mike, did the Fujinon 24-180 cover 5K FF?

Hi Gary. I was shooting a project for Red Bull and the specs for the show were 4KHD. No vignette there. I did mess around with 5K full frame to check coverage and there is vignetting on the wide end. I can't recall exactly where it starts and ends. On the 75-400 I did not note any vignetting at 5K. Both lenses are crazy sharp glass though. Wide open looks fantastic. Best zooms I have ever used for sure.

The 75-400 covers 5K. The 24-180 does not.

That lens weighs almost 13 lbs and requires a lens support. I just tested it and it is gorgeous, but do you really want to go handheld with that?

I'd love a side-by-side comparison of this new Fujinon with the new Optimo 19.5-94. They both seem similar in size, weight, etc.. Angenieux has a great servo unit as well.

I think the Optimo this lens is based on, the 17-80mm, comes in at 5.5Kg. That isn't the same weight category as the rather lightweight new Fujinon.

The 30-300mm might not be the ideal handheld lens but it is right up my alley for recording live shows. Just looking for a wide for handheld that cuts well with this, possibly the new 15.5-47mm that Canon just announced. I would rather go all Angeniuex but I am worried about the long wait time.

I really can't wait to sell my house!

The 24-180mm Fujinon is probably my dream lens. Couple that with the wide Alura and I think I would be in happy land. Unfortunately, I probably can't justify the price.

Not at all.
They are similar in focal length range and maximum aperture only, in my opinion.

The Angie 19.5-94 is over double the weight (12.3lbs vs 5.6lbs), longer in length by about 4.5"inches and the front diameter is much different (136mm vs 114mm). Also, the Angenieux 19.5-94 will not be offered with a servo of any kind at this time. The Angie servo's are only for the DP series and the 15-40, 28-76, and 45-120.

The Angie 19.5-94 is (just a little) longer and heavier than the legendary 17-80 optimo. It also does not have i/technology, whereas the Fujinon has i/technology and Arri LDS.

Both lenses look great, but the size and weight of the Fujinon makes it a different beast. I find myself on two sets, regular narrative and run and gun crazy. I'll use my Cooke primes on most shoots, but this Fujinon looks like a great all-in-one LWZ solution. This is from a guy who really regretted not getting in on the Angie DP series when they were first released. Regarding the Fujinon Cabrio, I really hope the tradeoffs aren't killer. A lens of this range in that size must have some Achilles heel or it's pure wizardry. I'm waiting to find out. Luckily, if anyone can make a good compact zoom, it's Fujinon. They have the zoom heritage and experience to back it up, so I'm not terribly worried.

The Fujinon is no doubt a handheld LWZ, while the Angie, although likely be a absolute dream lens and probably outperform the Fujinon on some if not many levels, does not seem to be a LWZ.

Wha??? OK, then I've been seriously misinformed about the new Optimo. Kinda surprised they're making it that large... OK, then if that's the case, color me not-interested. Not that I was going to buy it... I'm still saving my pennies for the 45-120.

Yeah, it (the angie 19.5-94) is basically a new angie 17-80, whilst the new angie 28-340, is the 'new' angie 24-290. It seems they are made to cover 5k on the Epic, thus appear to be simply longer variations of their protocessors with more light loss... which makes me suspect there is a very mild tele-extending element group added to the original lens designs. Explains the larger image circle, offset/longer focal range, AND light loss in aperture.

But I'm not going to rush to judgement. I'm just thinking of the new lenses as being Epic 5k versions of the lenses we have come to love. :)

Hmm, from my perspective (could be totally wrong here), Fugi did the same thing as Cooke with the iPanchros -- take their existing T2 lineup (S4 for Cooke, 18-85mm T2 for Fuji), scale down the glass so that it's now a T2.8 (but overall, keep the exact same optical design). The resulting lens is much lighter, and in Fugi's case, they also slightly expanded the image circle for 5K with a mild rear element, which explains the slight increase in focal length vs. their existing T2 zoom, and the 0.1 increate in T stop from the expected T2.8.

Again, I could be totally wrong, but if it performs like their existing 18-85mm T2, just one stop slower, this is going to be one kick-ass LWZ. Ideal for run and gun when paired with an Epic.

And $38K is a crazy good price for this if it is.

Erich, am I to assume from that comment that the awesome 18-85mm T2 Fuji doesn't cover 5K FF?

I wish I knew, haven't got to try it on my Epic yet :(. Fuji doesn't state yes or no on their website. Mitch, help us out here!
