  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

FS: Viewfactor Impero/Inclino three motor kit

Tony, if the motors can't drive ZF's or standards, then there's something very, very wrong. Have you talked to Curt about this?

Yes I have been in contact with him about this. That's why this is the third pair of motors I've had. First one was with the original motor, then Curt changed the motor design to the cycloid drive. I got one of those but it still wasn't strong enough and then I got new motors on Sept. 16 which turned out not to be strong enough to run the RED primes :embarassed:

Have you talked with Lee Dashiell? He reported that his system is working flawlessly.

Good shooting and best regards,

Leo

Well, all of this is telling. I am not sure what the big picture is saying yet.

Tony, I look forward to you video.

Curt, I would love to hear your side.

Thank You Sir.
Rich

Tony have you tried running your system off of a Red brick and Red cradle?

I have only been running the system off of either a RED brick or a Tiffen PowerCube with the DTAP cable. Running it off of the RED never worked for me.

I haven't talked to Lee. I'd like to hear what lenses he has used the system on. If his works fine then it's beyond me why I've been given faulty motors three times.

Ouch...

I'd love Curt to chime in here.
I cancelled my early order, due to... well just having enough stuff to wait for. :)
But I've alwaus hoped and thought that this would be the ultimate FF.

It seems it may not be excactly that, and this may well explain all the delays.

But I hope to be proven wrong!

I own a Preston 3 and a Bartech.

I saw a demonstration on the View Factor and i tried to play with it on my S4'rs.

I don't think is voltage, since i tried it with my steadicam bricks d taps.

I don't Think is a software issue either.

But i'm almost 100% sure its the motors. They Sound and feel totally Mickey Mouse when compared with the Preston and Bartech motors.

Gustavo - by power consumption I mean the amount of power the software in the motors are allowing it to draw. Not how much power the battery can provide. There's some kind of limit built into the motors and I seem to be hitting that limit.

EDIT: Video has been uploaded - currently waiting to be converted: http://vimeo.com/6697523

Please excuse the crappy video and sound - my RED was ... well :-)

Tony,

The video you posted will certainly not help you "with a quick sale".

Hopefully and I presume that's your intention it will help you by putting some pressure on Curt that he will solve all the technical problems asap.

regards

Ed

Tony, are you sure its only the motor? On the video it looks like it could also be the Impero. Bad contacts under the knob? Disturbed signals?
I really hope you had bad luck with this paricular one, and one more change will solve the problems.
Thanks for posting your experiences and the video.
Cheers,
Marc

This looks like a power thing - as in voltage. When running my stepper motors for my 35mm timelapse units 12v often just doesn't cut it and the motors hickup in a similar way. When I double the voltage to 24v it runs smooth as butter. I wonder how these would run if you powered it at 18v or 24v? A pain in the ass to work with on a 12-14v system, but it could pinpoint the problem. Anyone know what these motors are rated at?

The Impero doesn't have contacts under the knob. I'm not sure how exactly the encoder works but it's not a mechanical one. I really do hope I'm just struck with extremely bad luck and that this will be remedied somehow. I just did a test where I ran the Impero through a bus cable. The random problems and glitches did seem to go away, but the motor still dies on my like before.

Going into this I knew that selling the kit could prove difficult to sell by disclosing the problems I'm experiencing. However - I'm confident that in time Curt will be able to fix these issues and then I'll have a great wireless follow focus - unless it's sold by then. So if anyone has the same confidence that Curt will fix these issues - here's your chance to buy one of the first kits out there ;-)

So far, though - no offers

I realize nobody will believe me when I say that this post wasn't intended to put pressure onto Curt. I already sent him an e-mail with another video last week about these problems and I hope to hear from him soon. I had e-mail problems over the weekend and I know he wrote me back for more information which I've provided him with. I also sent him a link to this video and told him I had put the set up for sale, but I have no idea if he's following this thread or not.

I'm almost 100% certain that is not a motor issue. I think it is the Impero. We have a very early beta version of the Impero we are using with the Birger mount, and on very rare occasion we'll get some related strangeness, as well. Since we don't have the Inclino motors, that can't be our issue.

We'll be sending our unit in to Birger for upgrade to the current version of the Impero/Birger (ours is not field upgradeable), and I'm very confident that our occasional issues with such strangeness will not occur. Overall, we are extremely happy with the Birger/Impero combination and am glad that we jumped on board when we did.

I think that you are probably throwing the baby out with the bath water here, Tony.

Tony:

Can the impero be hooked up by wire and do they drift in wired mode? At least with the RPP it seems like an impero problem.

Interested in trading for one of my underwater housings? I have been interested in experimenting with the motors but haven't been able to justify the expense of other systems and was waiting for VFS. Maybe it would be a way for me to get started, get you some value for your money without worrying about selling to someone else that might be unhappy - and I could work with Curt on getting it working properly over the long term without any pressure since I am not in need of it working reliably right now.

Michael - your question was answered above as a reply to Marc Berger.

Unfortunately I'm not interested in underwater photography so I'm going to have to pass on your offer. Thanks, though :-)
