  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Frustrated, now I hope the price of the Dragon Epic can comfort the frustration, 35K$

As we know, most who bought Epics recently got free dragon upgrade (including me), and it's said that dragon upgrade for epic to dragon is 6k$. Then if the 6K$ is for the old epic owners, and not available for new price epics(or different price), and the dragon's price is still 35K$, then everyone will be happy including RED. I think the true cost for the upgrade is a bit less than 6K ( research cost is another thing).

It seemed that Dragon can do 6K 100FPS, which means much more bandwidth(different chips), and much better image quality, so the new flagship in 35K$ is a very reasonable choice.

Anyone think the same as me?

Something that would throw the cat amongst the pigeons - and maybe start an even crazier situation!

What you're saying is the two sets of pre-slash Epic owners get Dragon for either $6K or free (depending on when they purchased)...

But, new price Epic owners (as of Nov 2nd) pay more for Dragon... maybe double.

Then, the crazyness would begin...

But, maybe RED have something like this in mind... everyone presumes it's all over - but maybe you're right & this would be something to give current owners something back.

To get the free upgrade, you have to pay 50K$/brain with accessories, and must bought them recently.

I think there won't be much craziness, people hate losing what they already got, but feel much less or even nothing about can't get something cheap.

And RED will come out as a saver when announce the Dragon price, then every frustrated Epic owner will be happy and more loyalty:) Remember, Epic owners are usually long time customers.

I own an Epic myself - and will be in line for the 6K Dragon.

Just this recent situation is 'interesting' (to say the least!).

If it transpires that the new cheaper Epic has a different cost path to Dragon, then Jim will probably have to handle a whole new crowd of people that want the 6K upgrade even though they bought in at 19K.

Who knows, we live in a crazy RED world at the moment.

If that is the cause then that's fine. More expensive for new epic owners. Cheaper for the people that have had their epics and paid full price. And obviously The m owners get first dibs on the chips.

Sorry but I'm so fucking confused about the price for upgrading my Epics to Dragon. One was an Epic Stge 2 and one was purchased last year before the price INCREASE to 31K. Can someone at RED please clarify? Is the upgrade free? Or do I have to pay the same price ($6k) as someone who just bought at the new, highly discounted price?

It's the humanity, those who bought in 19K is already laughing (while people like me are crying:cryin:). A cheaper upgrade for those who paid much more than them won't annoy them, and Epic will be middle range after dragon become the flagship. And Epic is sure enough for most people, who bought with 19K is already satisfied.

Anyway, RED have their own idea, if they announce the dragon for 25K, 6K upgrade for every epic, I will feel frustrated again.

The Stage 2 camera you bought for 19.500, included 1x S35 MYSTERIUM-X brain with PL mount, 1x 5" LCD, 1x REDMOTE, 1x Side CF Module, 1x Module Adaptor, 1x Base I/O Module, 1x Pro Battery Module, 2x REDVOLT standard batteries, and 1x travel charger.

Your brain cost you less than 12k

You too will have to pay $6k for the updrade.

Your other camera will also cost $6 to upgrade

If the dragon chip can do 6k 100fps.... then 5k must me up to 200? 4k 300 fps... ? Wooo hoooooo.. I hope my math is correct.

oh and 16 stops! and clean at 2000 ASA.

Its a gift that keeps on givin !
6K 100FPS should be equal to 36/25*100=144FPS 5K, and 100FPS is not sure yet. But technically I can't believe it will work well with completely different sensor on same chips.

Since I am new, who can tell me what is stage2 EPIC?

The Stages program was something that allowed Red One owners to trade up to an Epic - or upgrade and keep their camera. All at varying price points (Stage 1,2 & 3 all for Red One owners). Sort of a Loyalty Rewards Scheme.

Stage 4 was the first time that non Red One owners could get an Epic (unless they purchased an M). At this stage (2011) there was a massive waiting list.

So, most Stage 1,2 & 3/3.5 people got their Epics for a lot less.

Stage 4 (like myself) paid the price Red was asking at the time (albeit with the 6K upgrade option to Dragon when it comes).

It's the humanity, those who bought in 19K is already laughing (while people like me are crying:cryin:). Now, with the 19K Epic it 'seems' that (if you read Jim's post) these will also cost 6K to upgrade also. So, whilst it's an idea to charge more for the Dragon upgrade to new 'post drop' Epic owners, I don't think it'll happen.

I like the idea of a tiered upgrade price - it, at least, gives current Epic owners something to smile about.

Let's wait & see.

what I don't understand is: you all know the Dragon is around the corner, who cares if the Epic price dropped, you all will have Dragons that retail for as much OR MORE then the Epic did.

I think this "devaluation" will be short lived when you can upgrade your Epic for 6k to a whole new camera, one that probably retails for 40k or so... (no idea obviously on specifics, just throwing a number out there), I think the people that will lose out most are the ones trying to sell before Dragon is out. That's probably not a good idea I am thinking

Thank you for the explain about the stage, Andy.

I spent 38K for the epic with Side SSD module and Pl mount, and I bought 2....now it's only 22.5K, including the 6K upgrade, I still lost 19K, which is already a big part of my film project's budget..Monday will be a bad day for me to explain these to my friends who invest on me (I bought earlier than plan because I visit U.S. in September). Anyway, hope the Dragon could be very cool so I can save some money on lights.

Jim/Jarred announced that because of the re-spin of the ASICs, the cost of dragon has increased, but they are holding the epic upgrade to $6K for epic upgrades. So an Epic-Dragon is most likely going to cost more than $25K.

I think the true cost for the upgrade is a bit less than 6K ( research cost is another thing).

Actually, it seems to me, I think Jim and others have hinted that Red in fact might be LOSING money (or not making as much) on the Dragon upgrades, because they have to redo the ASICs. Even though they have to respin the ASICs, they have vowed the keep the price at $6,000, to keep all of us happy, which, to me, is greatly appreciated.

I don't have specific knowledge about how much they will make or lose on each Dragon update, but that's the information I have picked up around here.

The price should not be too different because the new epic-dragon will not have the added expense of replacing existing circuit boards and the current MX sensor.

Reading between the lines of what jarred has been saying about the Dragon is that it's costing more than they thought. The Dragon upgrade is a great deal but I expect long waiting line for upgrades versus buying a new one off the shelf.
