  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Frustrated, now I hope the price of the Dragon Epic can comfort the frustration, 35K$

They've already said the upgrade costs $6k for all Epic owners.

Yes - maybe that's current Epic owners?

Who knows how we read meaning into Jim's words after this week!

Having been caught in the Epic price slash, I think it would rebalance things to have existing Epic owners at 6K and new (after price decrease) at a different price... at least that would be something :)

But again, after this week's events, I'm not going to expect or be surprised by anything anymore!

It's pretty clear that this is the price for Epic owners both past and future, except for a select few who fit into a special window where they purchased their Epic in a $50K+ package during a specified period. My guess is that they know who they are.

So what was this special 50K package that included a free Dragon upgrade? Many of us who purchased Epics have spent that much on cams +AKS.

I think it ran from NAB2012 until the price slash - any Epic and combo of kit that went over 50K got the Dragon for free.

That's right. One thing to consider for those who purchased their camera between NAB and Thursday's price cut is that you're really getting $10k of your purchase back. You get $6k in savings on the Dragon sensor and a $4k credit on your account towards future accessory purchases. There's effectively $5,500 in "lost value" for people who purchased after NAB. I'd assume that most people got some of that back in the interim from jobs and/or savings on rentals for their own creative work.

I think it's only fair that these new owners pay more. For the people that just got epics payed full price and now have to come up with another 6k while all the new people still get it for what 8,000 something less that what we payed. How is that right?

Why? You should consider yourself lucky you get the option of upgrading the sensor. When the EPIC program was first announced there was no plan to offer a sensor upgrade. The upgrade path for EPIC was to purchase a new brain with new capabilities. RED surprised us all at NAB 2011 by introducing a sensor upgrade program for EPIC.

I bought my epic 3 months ago knowing I could upgrade it. So please explain how I'm. Lucky again?

If 6K for old owners and 12K for new price owners, they were still telling the truth, because when the time they said so, all Epic owners means only old price owners:hand:. Anyway, it depends on RED.

I think the extra $4,000 credit towards accessories is only if you bought in October.

You are right. My mistake. Yeah, it would be awfully hard to make up $5,500 dollars in just a few short weeks.

As a person who just paid for an Epic (or rather, my brother and I's company did) I am obviously biased in this regard, but I don't agree with the idea of now suddenly increasing the price of the sensor upgrade for new customers. I don't see how increasing the price for for them does anything to help people who bought an Epic before the price drop. It just punishes the people who can now afford an Epic, but would have had a harder time justifying the purchase before. That is exactly the type of new customer who I take it Red is trying to attract. More customers means that Red becomes an even more ubiquitous format than it already is which means improved workflows for everyone and a better ecosystem for the camera in general in the long run. It also means more money for innovation and that R&D costs for future products can be spread out over a larger number of paying customers.

I get the impression that this kind of progress on the business side (wider adoption of their products due to a highly competitive pricing model which creates efficiencies everywhere for Red AND its customer base) is a big part of what Red is all about.

I bought them in September, but get them in full in Oct. , who can be more unlucky than me now.

Red has always used the date the camera body was invoiced. About the day the camera body was shipped out to you. Not the date of payment. I feel for ya man. I don't think it is anyone's fault tho. Red is just reacting to new competition that was only just announced days ago.

Can someone clarify if Dragon will come in a new Brain with added features to accommodate new sensor? Seems like if they can assemble an EPIC in '13 minutes' why not deliver Dragon in an all-new package with fixes many have voiced concerns about? Still not clear if they are retrofitting our bodies with new guts(not to sound literal.) Thought I read Dragon was largest sensor possible in an EPIC body due to space limitations that will never allow a FF 35 sensor. I assume 'Monstro' when it is released alongside potential 8 & 12K are for a completely new camera.

Who knows maybe they are planning a 16K sensor.:yesnod:

Keeping anything in focus will be impossible but hopefully AF tracking is perfected by then...
