  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Frame.IO Launches

Emery, is this now or will be in the future, something we can use in a kickstarter program where you can link some video (other than just an Apple platform? at present for potential contributors to see?)

Just trying to identify ways this would be useful to me.

Our share links work now but they are stand alone pages, not a video that you can embed in a third party site.

Elsie, it would not make sense for Frame.io to compete with purpose built mass distribution frameworks like Youtube, Vimeo, etc..
I think they are better off utilizing their bandwidth and resources maintaining peak file transfer performance, transcoding, and whatever new features they have in store.

I would hate to see a performance drop because 50 million people are watching cat videos.

You are correct Todd. We're not trying to compete with YouTube or Vimeo. Those are still the best platforms for distribution.

Is there an ipad companion app? This would be a great dailies tool! Totally giving it a shot.

I would love to see this available for my clients who wouldn't have a Frame account. It's the perfect feedback tool for multiple revisions, but don't want to have my clients have to create an account on something just to review a video. Could this possibly be added?

+1 on that feature request. I mentioned that to Emery in an email as well. In reality a ton of clients, producers, etc will not make the time to do something as simple as create an account for a service. Perhaps a link with password for guests (like vimeo) at bare minimum for guest access?

I've seen it so often with Basecamp. Internal teams use heavily, but clients do not mess with or pay attention to Basecamp and rarely login.

Asking a heavy hitter CD at top tier global agency or senior marketing exec at a global brand to create an login? They simply do not have time or desire to meddle in pesky things such as logins, even if it's just 1 or 2 steps... need to think about the "white glove/kid glove" aspect for those types of reviewers.

Otherwise, the platform looks amazing! Especially the side-by-side feature.

Yeah, been on it thanks to the boys, and really love it too, this will definitely change things around on Global Collaborative Projects and will also create a new wave of possibilities.

"Film Collaboration" is certainly a space to be disrupted in the nearer future ... ;-)

Last mile pipes are still the bottleneck in most places over planet earth.

This tool is extremely cool and it works really well. However....I have to say it's too expensive. I want a tool like this locally hosted so the space can be more easily expanded. I'm sorry but in today's world where a TB is 10 bucks a month from Google, their prices are crazy.

Also, a gripe but it does not seem to support R3D file conversion. Anywho neat tool but not complete.

...to be fair, one should point out that 10 bucks is for google´s "nearline storage" product only, which has pricing "quirks" to it .... the fair google price comparison is more like 26 bucks for 1TB/storage plus traffic ... ;-)

that´s a cool 1000 bucks per month for a 40 TB project ... ;-))

hehehe
... and to the best of my memory, youtube was sinking 1 million bucks / day prior to their acquisition ... ;-) .... hosting is a beast.

Appreciate all the comments and we of course are thinking of all these same things you all are. Finding the best way to navigate these options and waters is the trick :)

keep chiming in, it's all valuable.

Glad you're digging it Eric. iOS is on our roadmap :)

Not only that, the Ipad retina has the most correct rec709 calibration I've seen on commercial products, which means it's easier to collaborate with grading if they have a screen that is almost as it should be.

Speaking of that, is it possible to have a basic calibration tool within frame.io so that if you use it for grading collaboration you could make up for the slight color/gamma differences on the monitor used?
It would also be really nice if you could have a folder that uploads automatically, so you could render out something to a folder and it ends up in your project on frame.io.

We have quite a few things planned, I'd suggest diving in now as we ramp into our next phase of feature dev.

Rest assure, I dived in the morning it was released, without any knowledge about it earlier.
Couple of hours after testing I started using it on a project with my cinematographer and compositing artist on a music video. :001_cool:

I love that :)

And the first copycat arrived... with a star wars clip in their demo-project.

Oh, Wipster, this one is new to me. ;) I was talking about "takes".

Not funny to see a great idea getting copied nearly 1:1 so fast.

'Takes' is an overlay for Vimeo basically and that's one approach, we have a different approach. We're all in new territory as the larger market settles into what the overall consumer needs/wants/cares about for online collaborative workflows.

The audio quality isn't very good though, I understand that the paid versions should feature better quality, but right now I can't review my music video because the sound is really crappy.
Is there something wrong with how I encode it before uploading? Are there any specs to ensure better quality?

I'm in the same boat. Audio quality isn't great.

Wow, this does look like a fantastic tool. Very curious to see how the pricing works out.

Would be good to hear if this is related to how we transcode the file before uploading or if it's the case with everything out of the transcode on the server side.
