  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

FOUNDRY STORM to rock NAB!

I've always been under the assumption that RED is developing free tools to enable it's customers until third parties embrace and develop more powerful tools for profit.

Perhaps that is true, but I think with this modular structure, they could release the base software and then charge for the modular add-ons - or take a cut from the 3rd-party develop add-ons - and then monetize it, while still giving the base tools away for free. Kind of like "apps for RED" or plug-ins - that way, we could have the best of both worlds, free and premium. And the 3rd-parties could have a true financial incentive, instead of doing it for love, like Hans-Georg...

That would be my suggestion.

It's still unclear to me what exactly the announcement is. The Foundry is developing software? Well... I guess that's what they do. And I have to sign up on a website to register my interest but we're not going to tell you who it's for, what it does and how much it costs...

I think marketing has just reached a new low.

it's ridiculous.

They showed it at NAB - so it was not a secret.
We reported on it on www.fxguide.com - including rough pricing, ship dates (around IBC) - features and current direction.(see below)

I think the Viral campaign worked really well for them - much better than just turning up at NAB and showing just a hand full of people.

I was not at their demo at RED day - we were filming in the EPIC Jail set for fxguidetv - but I am sure attendees would have enjoyed that demo as well.

After all these pronouncements of Storm coming, I made it a point to see it for myself. There was tiny booth for the demo. All 4 or 5 chairs inside were occupied. I didn't think much of it, so I just stood by the entrance, until after couple of minutes I started getting something, that looked like dirty looks from participants. I didn't know, that they were trying to introduce Storm, while at the same time keeping it under wraps. If they didn't want uninvited guests, they should have done the usual private, invitation only hotel suite route or at least some kind of sign. That made me uncomfortable. I felt like an uninvited guest at someone's party. Plain weird...

it would be great to hear from someone who legitimately attended the demo, since the people in the know are under NDA and have to tread lightly here...

did anyone go?

Is there going to be some sort of announcement as to what this Stom is? there was a lot of hype prior to NAB on this thread and now NAB is over, but nothing further posted about the software from Foundry within this thread. Am i missing something? was i supposed to go to NAB to see it? I did sign up on the site, but never got an email with a link to see what it's all about.

....would be nice if the cat's out of the bag to see an official announcement within this thread as to what it's all about. I am slowly loosing interest at this point.

I saw Storm at NAB. Looks intriguing but it's in a very early state. I think that they simply wanted to show it off to certain folks to get feedback about its general viability and approach as a post solution/editing app. And yeah I wouldn't take it personally if you got some dirty looks @Jake- booths at NAB are a very tricky thing to run and it's not always clear who you should be talking to.

For example, this year I got some surprising indifference from a particular monitor manufacturer whom I simply wanted to price out a couple of really expensive units for a project. I was handing them a free sale for the asking but I guess since it was on the last hour of the show they were just burnt out. I let it slide though because I've been there too...

I tried to get a look at STORM last tuesday when I was at their booth and didn't have any luck. MARI looks pretty cool though for those of us who do any 3D work and need to paint textures.

The Foundry STORM presentation at the RED EVENT was seriously lacking, IMO. All we saw was what looked like a $2K version of Redcine-X. Everything was fine and then it just ended with no demo of the software itself. Interface looked nice, but outside of questionably better concentration on metadata and what looked like a multi-track timeline, I can't see what it offers that REDCINE-X does not, or will not soon.

I got the impression that they set out to make their own "REDCINE" about a year ago and this is what it has become, but in the mean time REDCINE-X came along.

You may be right on with that theory. My impression talking with the folks in the booth was there was also some desire to expand the product to be a more all-encompassing, high-end editing and grading app.

I'd certainly love to see more choice out there than the big 3- Avid, Adobe, Apple. Competition is always good...

MUCH more behind the curtain Jeff.

For the record, STORM has only been developed for 4 months.

Hi,

I got a private demo, and I'm not under NDA. So I think some general comments won't piss anybody off.

A couple of impressions:

First don't do the private demo next to the main presentation, it was impossible to hear over the blaring sound of the main stage. :-)

As to the product, they have some good ideas. There was a rich tagging and search functionality that I could see would be of significant benefit on a longer shoot or one where the footage is going to pass through many hands.

There was the equivalent of Magic Bullet looks on steroids, and the way the looks could be applied and managed was also well thought out.

Stand alone look creation and management was slicker than in RC-X

The timeline had more functionality and there was a "sort of" secondaries capability if I remember correctly.

The software was in a very early stage, but it showed promise.

My feedback centered on a couple of areas. Specifically "you need to decide what you want to be when you grow up, and you'd better replace at least one of the pieces of software I'm already using".

One of the PITA things right now is the number of programs I have to shuffle through to create graded dailies.

While it is headed in some cool directions, right now it's just another program, but again it's early days. I think they are thinking smoke for DIT's. Not in functionality but in approach. i.e. a one stop shop to get you through your workflow, not deep functionality but one piece of software rather than so many. That would be cool but it has a long way to go to get there.

The last point I made has already been made here. REDCINE-X has come a long way and has the majority of the functionality currently shown in Storm.

Price hasn't been set, but for the price range they are thinking about they are going to need quite a bit more to differentiate themselves from the free offering.

I have said this over at SCARLETUSER: You are forgetting that REDcine-X is a FREE software and as such not intended for professional work. Don't take me wrong - it is really becoming the defacto tool on the sets and it is a very professional SW. What I mean by "not intended for professional work" is that Jim mentioned on several occasions that there is no direct support for this free SW besides of the RED forums. Many professional productions require SW with paid support. This is where STORM comes to its own. Also only the very base part of STORM does the things REDcine-X does as well, but STORM will be expanding the workflow way beyond the scope of REDcine-X. I can't give You more details as yet, but once STORM is out - You will clearly understand the difference between REDcine-X and STORM. REDcine-X is a FREE gift from Jim to everyone working with RED RAW media, so anyone can have a great basic (yet professional) tool for FREE to get them going, without having to spend more money on SW...

Peter

PS: The functions demoed at NAB have been limited to those that were at a reasonable stage in development and needed immediate feedback. Many more functions were intentionally omitted from the demo for various reasons. I see how the comparison to REDcineX can trigger heated debate, but as I have said before - please wait for the shipping product to fully understand what it is. Lot more info will be revealed prior its scheduled release later this year...

This time next year would be good for me...give me some time to save up. Its gonna be an expensive year as it is.

Will the Storm support a Wave or something similar? WIthout going off on a Tangent...ha!!!

I'm sure it will be great when they release it, I love all the Foundry's other software. I'm a HUGE fan of Nuke. I guess a lot of us are just confused as to what STORM really is because their presentation didn't show much.

After the Foundry's presentation on RED Day last week, there were a lot of people in the room scratching their heads.

I got a private demo, and I'm not under NDA. So I think some general comments won't piss anybody off.

Good comments. That helps a bit.

I see. But the whole point was that it would 'Rock NAB!', which it from what I understand didn't exactly do. And then refusing the say why it would be so great is just annoying.

putting the hope too high in the beginning, they should have just keep it quiet at first. I somehow feel the same way.

I wasn't there so I didn't see it, but I'm pretty under-whelmed with the information from NAB (or lack there-of) about this proposed product. The Foundry does amazing software, no doubt, so it's going to be interesting to see how this develops. Wouldn't give them the highest score in terms of marketing, though.

I hate hype as much as the next person but unfortunately it has become a necessary evil these days.

The software does look a bit like Redcine-X but I dare say it'll have superior support for plugins from the getgo than RCX does and build on the catalogue of features the Foundry has already developed. One thing I noticed on the fxguide story in the screenshot was the word dashwood beneath the in-tray. Also down the bottom left there is the flip and flop option. Obviously dashwood cinema solutions is all about stereoscopy such as their fcp and ae plugins so it's possible that Storm is capable of 3D with raw r3d files. Of course I'm only guessing.

Such features with a barrow full of effects plugins at users disposals and a ui that can edit, grade, add effects and what not directly onto r3d files with redrocket support could be a huge deal at a sub $2000 pricetag. I see Storm working as a tool to use before and after you edit in FCP or Avid; Prepping and finishing.

I wouldn't expect The Foundry to create a product that will simply be useful for taking on set, but I can imagine Storm being just as useful for this. That market is too small. The real money for such products is of course across the entire spectrum of post production houses and individuals which is where RedCine-X as an application doesn't venture too far. RCX is great on set and directly between production and post but that's essentially as far as it goes. I imagine Storm to be a tool that will bridge that gap quite substantially as a tool to use on-set, pre-edit and post edit. With The Foundry's excellent background I'd expect Storm to be a real gem for Reduser's.
