  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Forged Weapon killing mags on power up

This is correct -- I have not lost any footage. Nonetheless, I will happily submit a log file!

So i had a similar issue on an Epic-X. Camera on most current firmware, media loads in camera with extended wait time. Tried to reformat. Tells me format failed. Tried to load on computer. It will not see the card at all. 240GB 1.8 SSD. Card sent to red. Just got a repair cost from RED ..... =(

Interesting. This suggests it has nothing todo with DSCM2 cameras (or hardware at all), and is perhaps...firmware related?

Couple of questions:

1) Did this happen after a power down?

2) And if so, was the mag inside the camera when shutdown happened?

3) Was your mag formatted from an older build? (which perhaps explains why newer build camera may not recognize it?)

Yes
Yes
No, but I tried to format on an older build. After talking to red, I upgraded camera and tried to reformat again with same result.

Hmmm...was the shutdown improper? That seems to be a trigger.

Also was the Mag a mini? Or older 1.8"?

I think the more details we know...the better!

Proper shutdown
older 1.8

Everything was by the book. It makes no sense to me. The media was like new, it had maybe 30-40 cycles on it.

Client was able to pull clips off but when I went to reload and reformat it wouldn't take. I put the card in, it took an extended time to load, tried to reformat, got a reformat failed warning. rinse and repeat a few times. tried a secure reformat same outcome.

So its the mag that failed? Or the firmware is corrupting the mag? Hard to tell whats going on.

Well - now we know its not DSMC2 only, and not Mini mag only.

And you were on latest firmware yes?

Maybe its latest firmware related? And something "happens" on shutdown?

(PS - what size was your mag?)

The issue has been recreated on DSMC2, DSMC, Minigams AND 1.8 mags all with the current firmware.
All roads point to latest firmware.

We know you're listening RED, we know you understand the severity of the situation. A little shout-out would help ease our minds. Is help on the way?

The camera that bricked the mag was on the latest firmware. it was a 1.8 240GB

RED had me upgrade my camera to see if that would help the reformat issue ..... no dice and now I'm afraid to shoot. I can't afford to brick another piece of media.

Probably not going to fix it or the cause of the problem, but have you tried removing the side SSD module, cleaning the contacts, and reattaching? Again, grasping at stars, but just throwing it out there.

For DSMC1 that may help. But in DSMC2 isn't the side SSD module permanently attached?

Sorry to hear that Dave. Hopefully RED will have some answers soon.

They've confirmed it's not hardware related, so suppose current theory it's recent firmware...is best straw to grasp at right now.

So far...no reports of issues from older firmware...or older legacy media (256 1.8" for example).

Lets hope RED chimes in here, and has some solutions!

I was on the latest release build firmware. I know it's a firmware issue because I literally had zero problems with my camera the entire time I owned it -- I updated the firmware and this problem started happening -- same thing to a friend as well

I think this is the key - Jake was on to it from start!

Media was bricked on camera with latest firmware. RED says only way to fix my media is to have internal board replaced.

Internal board on the mag? Or the cam?

Best of luck with this. What did they say they thought it was?

On the mag. They said they were unsure of cause. Seems suspect to me that there are others with the same issue.
