  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

For sale set of 10 Leicas Van Diemen lenses

As i said i'll buy the 135mm, if your keeping the 100mm your already splitting the set.

The 100 is the only one that doesn't have the VFG logo on it and it is in meter while the others are feet. I am going to sell the lenses as a set 15 19 21 24 28 35 50 75 135. I have a 90mm Macro somewhere, have to look for it and then I may sell either it or the 100mm macro.

I think they are to be considered 5k or 6K. I am not sure. Mitch can you help?
 
The lenses all cover the full 36x24 still film format, so I believe that translates to "6K" in current REDspeak.

The 100mm and 135mm are macros. The 100mm is in metric while the others are feet. The last numbers at each row is the front diameter of the lens.

Who can still repair these lenses? I know that the talented engineers that came up with that conversion left Van Diemen during the debacle than ended with their receivership. I believe this was at the end of 2003 (I would have to check my records).

I ended up having two lenses held hostage for over 6 months, during which time Van Diemen refused to either return the lenses or the money that had been wired to them for the Super 16 upgrades.

One customer had his ARRI 16St held hostage for over two years, and was forced to pay the difference in exchange rate for money he had wired years previous (as it was told to me), and had to pay the balance up front, probably before the camera was even assembled.

When he (customer) insisted on dealing with them himself and sending the money before they proved the camera was ready, I took myself out of the equation. I still don't know if he ever got the camera back, or if it was usable. Both the 16St that I got back after S16 conversion were not usable and required major re-work.

I want to be clear, that as I understand it, these problems were management issues, not technician issues. I can certainly understand that employees would be reluctant to work when they are not getting paid. Someone who was not properly trained may have been substituted for some or all of the work.

I think the Van Diemen optical engineers started their own company, which is in the Midlands. They are probably the only ones that are competent to repair these lenses.

If anyone has any info on this, I'd like to know, just out of curiosity, or if I get a request for service that I know who to refer it to.

And having dealt with this, and getting burned myself (the story is worse, I've left out a lot of details). I'm also curious to hear the story from other perspectives.
 
Abel an service these lenses. Specifically, when one of ours was damaged we were able to get parts from Van Dieman and then do the work ourselves with no difficulty.

Hi Everyone
Lately I got many feedback regarding my Leica Van Demein set.
I assume this is because Epic 5K camera is at the gate and this lenses, as originally still lenses, should cover 5K.
We just shot a promo and a feature film on Red M-X and Canon 7D with them and they look superb,
I am debating myself whether let them go, as these were my very first lenses.
They are all VFG color matched.

As I wrote above I will sell these lenses if I get a good offer otherwise I will leave them for the 5K upcoming shoot

Hi Steve

I use rehoused Leica R (same glass as the Van Diemen rebuild) and am very happy with the results. The Van Diemen must be mechanically very good.
Here is a link to a movie I shot using various Leicas from 15mm to 280mm. I also shot a movie with German shooting Star Hanna Herzsprung that is now in post (see frame grab).
I also often rent out my lens and DP's are very happy with them.

PS: This movie was shown in 2k on a huge screen (nearly 1000 seat cinema) at a national festival here in switzerland - looked perfectly sharp:)

I still have them and enjoy shooting with them.
I receive offers that I really don't know what to answer.
I guess it is the fact that they will cover 5K but for me they are just great lenses even at 4K or even better at super 35mm when I first started to use them
