  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Follow Focus for Scarlet (400$)

I have a Redrock that I'd give you for $200 until you can get a more expensive one. Barely used the thing.. It's about 3 years old

hehe, the OP hated his, he is not looking for a red rock :)
...me neither ;) but thanks anyway ( if you're generally offering )
I guess we can get this thread to be a nice summary of sub 1000$ FFs if we keep it up! ;)

It's not in the Op's price range - but is in the sub $1K bracket.

Part of the new Letus range - I'd assume driven by a lot of the Hurlburt rigs they're doing.

I like the fact it slips onto rods and is also (seemingly) very versatile in setup... but I have not used it myself.

Thanks Brandon! very useful info! can you compare it to a high end FF in any way?

No, because I haven't personally used a high end one before, but the 1st AC that I worked with the other day when we shot the first scene of my feature was quite impressed with it. He usually uses an Arri follow focus. His only criticism was that it was larger than he was used to. He was impressed by the lack of backlash (and price).

You could always get yourself 8 50 Dollar Follow Focuses…

Will be interesting to see how they'll hold up.

hehe totally forgot about those. I saw it when they started the campaign. it's really an interesting concept. would love to know how it feels and works to pull focus with them. I'll probably just end up spending the 50$ out of curiosity. hehehe. for EFP use this might be really great stuff.

btw which one did you get? the NF2 or NF4? I assume you got the 15mm LW version.

NF4. Here is a picture of it on my Scarlet:

looks good! (whats the matte box and handle? :) )
I guess right now I'm torn between the NF4 TRUSMT and the LANPARTE (like the knob with the rubber coating) and as everyone is really pleased with these,
it seems that it doesn't make much difference in terms of quality.

O'Connor O-box and the handle is from Wooden Camera.

You are hiting me when you talk about redrock follow focus...hahah I hate it. Bad experience. Bad not, worst experience. The backlash is the worst I tried, the technical service did not work fine....redrock is not a option anymore.

My doubt now is FF4 or Lanparte....mmmm
what do you think?

I had similar feelings regarding the Redrock Micro Follow Focus V2, but the Follow Focus|blue is a different design all together and seems built to last. Backlash adjustment right there on the gear box. Just used it on a shoot for consecutive days of 12, 16, 12, 10, and 11 hours. Many lens changes and a few of those days were very dusty.

It's priced a bit higher than your target price point, but I don't think there's a better value for the money on the market. I have used the Trusmt and Lanparte follow focus units. I don't feel they hold up for regular use, but they do fit your price point. Just know you'll be buying another within a year.

Hi Phill thank you!!

I promise to myself don't trust anymore in redrock follow focus. I know it, it's bad to said this, but i lost money with them....

I would like to buy one cheap follow focus right now because I would not be able to buy OConnor FF right now, so it's something temporary....1 year aprox.
I thin i am gonna buy lanparte...it seems better...

thanks!!

Thanks Phil for the insight. I guess all choices are just a temporary solution before having enough dough to spend it on the OConnor ... ;)

Well I'll play devil's advocate against myself. I'm a regular to heavy shooter. Meaning I shoot pretty much several days out of every week out of the year and I need gear that will hold up to that. I also prefer primes, so the release action and movement on the follow focus is important to me.

If I was a lighter shooter and took care of my gear, I would say you can make any one of the other FF units mentioned last longer.

Peter, where did you order yours? direct from coollcd in china?

Yes, directly from coollcd in China. One of the great plus is the possibility to attach the gear wheel on the right or left side.

Hehe. Thank you Phil. That sounds very reasonable. now off to decide on the FF and then the matte box. Oh man, renting is so damn easy ;)
