  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Focus....

I remember, somewhere in the forum, Jarred saying the Canon mount was done and being tested. So I guess when EPIC releases, the Canon mount option will be ready available.

that's good news - we really like some Canon lenses

I recently purchased the new 70-200 f2.8L IS II. While it has similar image characteristics of the previous version (perhaps a bit sharper), the IS is pretty phenomenal.

The thing I liked most about that video, wasn't the demonstration of auto-focus, but just the quality of the video. I missed the point I know, but what was that video shot on? an Epic? It just looks so... good. The thing that excites me most about RED cameras, is how they seem to perceive light in the same manner as our eyes. Ever since I got into photography, I've always had to keep in mind that how things look with my eye, isn't how the camera is going to see it. RED seems to be closing down that difference. Exciting!

Can we get someone from Red to confirm that this Canon EOS mount will be ready when Epic is released or shortly thereafter? It would have a major impact on my decision to turn my Red One in on the stage 3 program...

Mr. Jannard. Amazing news!

Some people still cannot see all the potential of this. And as you say, you choose. It is so good news anyway you see it.

My only concern will be the transition time for us going from a Decent Redone Canon mount system with decent Follow focus control into the Epic system.

I know you guys are doing miracles here, but the transition time scares me a little bit, after I waited for a long time to have my Red and Canon system work. It was one of the most frustrating time, having my Red and not be able to pull focus with my Canon lenses for months!. I would hate to have my Epic, and have to wait 7 months until I can get the Redmote Pro.

But anyway, congratulations Mr. Jannard. You are making history with Red and Epic.

Keep the good news coming!!

Mitch... no question that manual shooting is here to stay. There are also some very interesting situations where this type of AF can be extremely helpful. You choose. You can do it either way you want whenever you want. No other pro camera offers you both options. We believe in advancement of technology that gives you choices.

Might be nice to see this AF mode in action. Just simple follow focus
of one person walking to camera and then racking back and forth
to another person in the background. After all we've already
seen what HDR in motion can do..be nice to see bit of AF motion.

Well, I did a little examination of the file provided. Focus was moved from stationary at 1.3m to locked at 1.7m in 13 frames at 24fps for a time of 0.54 seconds. I tried it with my 20D + 85/1.8 (over 5 year old camera, almost 20 year old lens) and it made the same transition from stopped to locked in 3 frames at 30fps for a time of 0.1 seconds.

The lens in the clip is a Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L II which is a pig when it comes to autofocus (not Red's fault) whereas you tested a 85mm f/1.8 which has much less glass to move around. the 1.2 also has a front focusing design so it moves the heavier front elements in and out.

The somewhat-slower focusing f/1.2 version does not come close to accounting for this enormous difference. Most of the difference was caused because the 1.2 in the clip over-shot the target and then had to go back. This is caused by the contrast-detection method used in the red cameras. The phase-detection system in my 20D went straight to the right focus point and stopped without overshoot, which is where most of the advantage came.

Jim, I guess the electronic zoom is not gone be ready by the end of the year but can you tell me what the front diameter and weight will be for the electronic zoom lens?
