LOVE this black and white with red idea. But it needs work

1 The red edges should ONLY show up on stuff that is close to being in focus not the entire frame,

2 Make the red edges a tad bit bigger or let the user adjust them so that on the tiny RED LCD you can see them!

I love it too. It actually shows me the DOF I'm moving through. The intensity/color is too muted this iteration. I'd like the ability to:

adjust intensity of peaking
change peaking color
Quick on/off from color viewfinder to check focus.

This focus feature sounds like a really sweet implementation. Anyone take a picture of what the GUI looks like when the feature is active? Thanks in advance if someone can post.

I think they made the focus assist on a 24inch DELL screen, as it looks fine on a big output but not on the RED LCD....need option to change size of the red lines..:)

ROCK ON!

I'll have to try that. I think once it gets fine tuned a lot of people are going to be appreciative of it. And the cool thing is anyone who's gotten used to the JVC, Panasonic or Sony implementation will pick up RED and feel right at home.

here is a quick snap:

We didn't test this the other day - is more or less coloured peaking? The EX-1 has coloured peaking (with customisable colour, which is very handy) making the image B&W obviously helps even more to accentuate the detail.

Be 'ware - When in magic focus, the image recorded to disc/cf is black and white, just like your display. This seems like a non-trival issue if one wants to record while using magic focus.

I had to retreat to the excellent focus assist graph to record in color.

This is a bug we had not discovered (beta build). Thanks for pointing this one out. We are on it.

Didn't someone mention though that it's only the saturation slider in RedCine (from the footage metadata) going to zero, so you can recover the colour in post by moving that slider back to 1?

That's the beauty of RAW....

We are checking into the cause of that.

But RAW doesn't RECORD monochrome, its just metadata. So reset the metadata for SATURATION in REDALERT and it'll be fine.

I just wanted to take the time and thank the RED team for implementing this. It has been VERY helpful so far! I agree that if we can get the red lines a little more visible it would be even better. Thanks again!!!

Aiiieee that'd be a tough thing to discover in the edit suite :)

Yeah.. a bit of a heart attack until he puts saturation back to 1. Just a little bug.

That and getting the Quicktime reference to show up in color.

As for line width.. im still not super-convinced the lines need to be wider...

Maybe intensity brighter? I think certain subjects are perhaps better than others currently. That's is true of other cameras using this feature also.

I know I like that the EX1 has different levels you can choose vs. the JVC which can be subtle at times. So user configurable would be the ultimate someday... but it's already very helpful. Great work.

It's evident to me now that soon there's going to be nothing left to bitch about. Not sure how I'm going to deal with that. I guess I'll just have to shoot instead...

oh boy.. without the bitching REDUSER would halt to 3 posts a day :)

Unless we're all posting footage. :-)

Serving an artistic community is just begging for bitching. Everyone needs to keep that in mind when they see people "go off" around here. A lot of egos, fragilities, fear, frustration, technical misunderstanding... but ultimately there will be great things produced with this camera.

absolutely.. we can't be Angels till our passion dies, and without passion, there is no art.
