  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

FLUT Ignorance

Graeme,

That's wonderful! That will help a lot in choosing what parts of the image are "okay" to clip.

Wish I could check that functionality right now, but my camera is at Red getting the MX. : )

Graeme,
Thank you for that thorough explanation. FLUT's concept and execution was still a little cloudy for me.
I think the FLUT control is fantastic; the fine adjustment is really terrific.
Looking forward to geting my first camera back from the upgrade so I can really see the science at work!
The new "RAW Check" is very welcome too.
Cheers,
Harry

Sounds good Harry. We like the fine adjustments too.

Looking forward to REDfilm and its description (formula/LUT). :-)

Another question, have you thought about a more descriptive name of the adjustment currently known as "FLUT"? Something like Soft Gain, or Fine ISO Adjustment? "FLUT" is just too cryptic to show in the UI as the label of the slider. :-)

Thor, we've put a "RAW Check" false colour mode in that shows the image black and white, with two warning bands - dark (check your shadows) in purple and red for a RAW clipping alert. It doesn't matter what you set your ISO or FLUT™™ to. If you're clipping in the RAW this "RAW Check" will show you. I was never that much of a false colour kinda guy before, but this one I use a lot now - and it works great for me. I did a little M-X test shoot here as I can never have too much nice footage on my system, and it was of shiny reflective objects, so the RAW check helped me really judge the ETTR exposure to be just where I wanted it.

Graeme

hi graeme, sounds great!

one q: is false color/RAWcheck and edge highlight now seperated? can i apply them to two different user buttons?

Graeme, all this sounds very very good. One may either finetune the desired look already while shooting, or one may shoot to the right and postpone all grading into post.

The remaining question is, with these false colors in raw metering, how does one know where the linear part of the sensor ends? There are situations when it's important not to go beyond this point and compress the highlights (while they are still not clipped). I'm assuming M-X is not linear to the very end before clipping occurs.
