Hi Guys,
I'm wondering if you can shoot with a flat profile for you ProRes files while having the RED's luts (dragon color, red gamma,) still on you LCD. I saw that you can change "video" setting and am wondering if this is the only way to get a flat, gradeable ProRes file? Also if there is limitation if you are shooting R3D's and ProRes simultaneously. Any Ideas? Thanks guys

Yes. This is pretty much the standard workflow of DSMC2 bodies that can shoot the intermediate codecs.

I've also read in the manuals that shooting redcode + prores simultaneously limits your compression options, something like from 8:1 to 13:1. Definitely worth keeping in mind. Really miss this feature though as someone still shooting on the epic. A fair trade off all things considered, and may improve with future fw updates.

Thanks Phil. Can you tell me a bit more about the workflow. So if I want to shoot a flat prores file I need to also be viewing it on my RED LCD in that flat profile, (unlike r3d) would the only way be to add a lut to an external monitor to show the clients what a graded image would look like. Any tips for getting the most out of post but still impressing uniformed clients?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but currently Pro-Res only records in RedLogFilm regardless of what your video display settings are set to. So set it up normally (a 3D Lut or Redgamma4 or whatnot) and your Prores file will record flat. Note that playback will be in redlogfilm though.

Hi Josiah, For me it hasn't been that way. It has the "baked" in look of gamma 4.

you need to choose redlogfilm for a flat profile for your prores.

this is how im understanding it as of now and im did an prores only job and am on a raw only job, i havent done simultaneous yet and my dit told me he had power and compression issues on a weapon shoot he did, so im not risking it at this point.

so, where it says dragoncolor, that pull down is what you are viewing on the monitor only,
the second pulldown choice is what is attached to a raw file as meta data so by default the dit pulls up your footage it has that look on it, but can be changed, not baked in.
though whatever that second pulldown choice is, redgamma4, redlogfilm, etc, is baked into your prores.
