  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Fixed or not

I hope the fixed comes out real soon after the Cinema
I bet next month we find out some real info on release, etc

Fixed. Complete kit. Not a pro and shooting mostly doc but as a former stills photographer I like my images to look good and manageable (rescuable) in post.

I like the 2/3 size as I will be mostly shooting in non-controlled environment, so focus should be easier in low light. I would much rather have deep focus than bad focus, especially if the details don't get marred by bad compression artifacts.

If I ever get into the "beauty shots" business, I would probably upgrade to a larger sensor and fancier glass, if I can afford it.

To me, film is more about lattitude, depth and resolution than DOF.

Saving up impatiently for the first digital film camera I can afford (if it ever sees the light, that is) -

oh well that is GREAT news.
hope that's correct - I wanna have my feature in the can and festival ready by June 2010

Got plenty of FF Nikon glass and love bokeh porn as much as the next DSMC shooter however the fixed lens is the winner for me because:

a)Complete kit price point
b)Already have a DSLR
c)Fixed is compatible with ALL DSMC modules
d)150fps burst FTW

..oh and just ask David Mullen; getting shallow depth of field on 2/3 is a matter of simple maths and lighting :)

Yes, "Frozen River" has plenty of shots with shallow DOF appropriate to the scenes. AFAIK it was shot on a 2/3" Varicam. In a controlled environment it is not impossible to set the right focal length and aperture, even with a 2/3" sensor.

Has there been any talk of the 'complete kit' for the interchangeable 2/3 cinema?

That's what I'm looking forward to.

I shoot a lot of my stills on the D90 but if the job calls for it I rent a Hasselblad and some lenses. It works out much cheaper than renting say...an Arri 435 with glass for the day.

Im looking forward to just renting a brain with a Nikon mount as the situation calls for it.
Im hoping that we can get a Nikon smart mount for fairly cheap...my Nikkor 50mm 1.8 and Lensbaby Composer are manual but a lot of my other lenses arent.

Would LOVE to use my Sigma 10-20mm 4-5.6 and my "Bigma" 50-500mm 4-6.3 on a rented brain when the shoot calls for it...as well as all the other zooms in my kit.

Modularity+Market Saturation= Renters' market :)

I'm going fixed, because I don't have any 2/3" glass and I'll want to move up to the s35 or full frame version in a few years, so there's not much point investing in lenses. The fixed lens should be versatile enough, and according to RED it's going to be awesome quality.

I am thinking the same thing. 2/3 is enough for "now' for my projects, but am looking at some bigger projects as well. Also thinking that I'd like to get a set of primes one day. I'll pay the extra and go for a S35 right now and Fix lens model. I'll probably get a few Nikon 35 lenses to keep costs down.

I'm curious to know if I will be able to rent my camera out with a set of primes or will everyone have one?

I'm thinking of starting with the fixed lens complete kit, and then adding the Cinema later, for options of faster, wider, and longer lenses, and for two camera shoots.

I imagine I'll end up with two sets of modules, one for handheld run n' gun (likely with the REDhandle), and one tricked out full-featured set (likely with the Pro I/O and battery module) and then I just have to choose which brain and which module set I want at the time, or configure both for two camera shoots.

I'll also figure out a stripped-down, lightweight setup for Steadicam use, and that's why the most important thing for me, the thing that I can't currently get in any lightweight camera currently on the market, the one factor that will have me plunking down the cash right away... is wireless follow focus control. If the REDmote will do it, or something like an Impero can be easily added, I'll be waiting in line. If not, I'll have to wait and see what develops later.

My thinking too, but cinema first since I have 16mm lenses and have been collecting some more over the past year. I like the idea of adding a fixed for the fly-by-wire controls for run and gun convenience and for use on things like cranes and jib arms. Cheaper than motorizing one of my lenses.

I suspect almost everyone will be lining up to buy WHATEVER new Red camera hits the streets first.

This is what I'm worried about... I can't imagine myself holding off from getting a cinema if the fixed were delayed by any more than a month.

...maybe i would simply tide myself over by buying my modules and pretending to have a brain...

no pun intended.

The latest release sequence has the fixed coming out before the Cinema. But I don't understand pouncing on the Cinema if the fixed is delayed unless you know you'll have an adequate set of lenses lined up.

Fixed for me....at first...maaaaybe the FF35 - but me thinks it's gonna be a while before we hear anything about release dates or what order they'll go out in.

Fingers are crossed it'll be a nice Christmas, but I'm not holding my breath.

For me:

Four fixed lens Scarlet with 2x extenders and wide converters - my "go everywhere" cameras for run n' gun, POV, guerilla 2nd unit, low-profile documentaries, etc.

One FF35 Scarlet - I definitely need FF35 DSMC capability to crank out both motion footage and dedicated stills on certain productions

One Epic X - Great trade-in and extras package offer from RED - how could I pass up such a great deal?

One FF35 Epic - I quite frequently need high frame rates, and I almost exclusively use FF35 stills lenses with my current RED One cameras, and FF is my ultimately desired zone with Epic.

Note: I have high hopes for the new RED Electronic Lenses. If they are good, I'll probably switch to them for all my lens use, once RED has enough focal lengths available for me to do so. The genres I shoot in call for zooms - bring on the REL zooms in a wide range of focal lengths RED!

Note: I have high hopes for the new RED Electronic Lenses.

My thoughts exactly. S35 Scarlet and the EX equipped with both a Nikon mount and the RED Electronic mount will do almost everything I am asked to shoot.

I was debating about which to get, but after doing some studying on here; I have decided on the fixed. I want one to work on my amateur filming skills, but it's primary use will be as a "birthdays, sports, and Christmas" camcorder the rest of the time. (At least starting out, anyway...)

Finally, the Red Camera even a fiscally-challenged college student can (eventually) buy!!!

Fixed ... i'm lazy !! ...
Scarlet is replacing my personal camera (Redone) ... i want the smallest, lightest, less is better here .. basically just want to pick up one bag (not huge) and i'm out the door ...
