Hi guys

We just shot our first RED music videoclip in Switzerland.
Its a hiphop video for SAD,Seven and Stress. They are the swiss finest at the moment.

Everthing went fine. The RED was a charm to work with.
I tested the RED in the last couple of weeks and I have to say it's realy a great camera. So this was our first realworld test. We just wanted to shoot a real clip under real preassure.
We shot it handheld, on tripod and with the actioncam. The RED was rock solid. No Problem.

Some infos. I directed it together with Samuel Flückiger.
I also was the dp together with Brian Goff, yes he's the creator of the actioncam (go see it at the NAB) and the best steady operator in whole switzerland. :weight_lift:

We used the following lenses:
RED 18-55mm
Zeiss Distangon 14mm 2.1
Angenieux 25-290mm 3.9
RED 300mm 2.8
Canon S16mm 8-64mm 2.3

So right now I'm in the midle of the editing process.
I think we will be finished in about 10 days. Then I will post a link to the clip.

Here some snapshots right out of redcine. I remind you, it's not fullrez so dont start picking around the image quality.

So till later
Cheers

Hi Tim,

looks fine!
I have one question however

We used the following lenses:
RED 18-55mm
Zeiss Distangon 14mm 2.1
Angenieux 25-290mm 3.9
Angenieux 25-290mm 3.9? What kind of lens is that? I thought i would know almost all angenieux?
Or was it the the 25-250 f3.2-t3.9 / 24-290 f2.5?-t2.8

First Swiss RED music videoclip could be much better than the "clonky" first Austrian music video clip if I'm remember well.

Now I've got it.

It's a Swiss made.

Yeah it was the 25-290 f3.2-t3.9. I got the numbers mixed up, sorry lagoon.
It's an old lens but performs pretty good on the RED. We focused by hand without follow focus handheld. The RED gets a heavy beast then. So Brian and I always switched as operators. That was fun. Everyone tried to catch cooler angles etc.

We shot all the performence scenes in 4K. All the acting and action sequences were shot in 2K 120fps and some 75fps.
We tried to get that John Woo slomo stuff going. Sometimes we ran a bit out of light, but it worked out fine. Next time a double the lighting setup.

So yeah it's swiss made like the actioncam, go see it at the NAB. It's the killer steadycam rig. So enough free advertisement for Brians rigs.
Did I tell you that they are great ?:innocent:

I show you more in a couple of days.

Hi guys,

Cool can't wait to see some. One question I saw you guys had some lasers. Did you ever point them directly in the lens? If so, what was the reaction of the sensor? Love to see some of that stuff if you did, since I've been curious to see how it holds up with lasers?

regards,

Fredrik Callinggard

Hey Weirdcrew

Yes the laser hit the sensor from time to time. There was no reaction image wise. I think as long you dont hit the sensor for to long its all ok.

We used a lot of 2K tungsten lights. I actualy wanted to use some 4K and 6K HMIs but we didn't get the flicker free ones. So we had to stick with our 2Ks. We also used one 12K dinolight in the big hall scene. That thing is always nice to have on the set. I love hard backlight, so the dino always helps there.

Hi Tim,

What speeds where you shooting?

Stephen

Hi Stephen

We shot 25p, 75fps and a lot of 120fps.
You need the best glass for 2K RED stuff. The picture gets softer in 2K mode. Also the canon S16 8-64mm showed a lot of CA.
The Angenieux S16 7-84mm (I'm not sure if it ist till 84) is very good for RED 2K shooting but it cost 30K. I tested it with Daniel Reichenbach in Januar and it performed very very well.

Hi Tim,

Unfortunately there are very few really good lenses for S16 except the Zeiss Ultra 16 and possibly the Cooke S16 primes. None of the S16 zooms are in the class of the Optimos for 35mm.

Hi John

There is noise. A lot in the blue chanal. You have to work the files in post a lot to hide some of it. In the bigger files you will see it easily. It looks a bit like film thoug. Right now I'm not sure how it will look in a 1080p master. I guess it will look preaty good when you downscale.
Remember, Film gets noisy too, when you under expose or have a lot of shadow parts in your frame. Maybe build 16 will improve that a bit.
But RED takes great pictures when you do your stuff right.
Just learn the tool and you are fine.

Just to make this clear, the RED is a realy great Cam that easily beats the F900 and Varicam. I cant tell about the F-23 or D-20 but I worked with the others I metioned.

Yeah Stephen, the lenses are still a key factor in the REDolution.
I realy hope, the Birger mount will work. This could change the whole bizz.

Cheers
Tim
