  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

First shots from the new German Primes betatest

Good point Mark.

I would say it could be a sort of cooperation between several German companies to make it something like that.

Let's play with combinations now.

I'll start:

- Schott would provide glass

- Leica or Schneider-Kreuznach would make optical design

- ISCO would do coating

- P+S Technik would make mechanics and lens markings

Big volumes could possibly drive big earnings !?

They try to learn from RED... or jump in RED marketplace like an asteroid...

or I could be also totally wrong...

Good choices Sanjin,

Glass - Schott for sure
Optical design - I'll stick my neck out and say Leica, the shots we've seen so far don't look like Schneider to me.
ISCO - that would be the obvious choice for coating and mechanical assembly,I don't think P&S have the manufacturing
set up to deliver in the quantities talked about.
The plot thickens.
Tom.

If it was a co-operative effort between German companies, I would of pitched licensing the Leica name for the brand. Leica Cine is going sell more glass than ISCO Industrial Optical Engineering :()

Nobody knew the name RED before they came out and they sold more cinema cameras than anyone ever expected... I guess the only thing important to sell a lot of lenses is a great quality to price ratio... if they sell a fine product for $3000-4000 per lens they will charge ahead... I guess we can expect a set of five for around $15.000...

but what I´m really missing from all the lenses talked about so far are decent wide angles... 14mm and 18mm are the lenses I´m really interested in... but I guess we won´t see many of them before next year...

I just checked again when Jim put out his statement about the RED lenses being T 1.8 and showed off the first pictures... just a few days after the new German lenses where anounced by Laguun... it looks like RED is starting to feel the pressure of the upcoming competition in the lens market and needed to react somehow...

NAB is going to be really exciting! I pity anyone who paid $50.000 for a set of Zeiss superspeeds... (although I would still love to own a set...) and I envy this guy I know who bought a set of Mark III´s 2 years ago for under 20.000 Euros... people where throwing out their superspeeds for cheap buying expensive digi primes for their 2/3" cameras... and he was laughing because he had already ordered his RED one and wisely anticipated what was about to happen when super35 sensors with PL mounts would flood the market...

As I can see the most of people here would like to have Leica Cine PL lenses as a new brand.

To get a quick impression about the quality of Leica glass on RED1

have a look at this picture below that shot on RED1 with Leica-R Summilux 50mm f/1.4 @ f/5.6

Sanjin,

thank you for the pic.

Nothing else is as beautiful then the color rendition, sharpness and bokeh of a Leica lens. Specially the M-serie which tops the R-serie! And with cine lenses they could build up on the M-design because they don´t have the restrictions of the DSLR needs.
It would be a shame if Leica wouldn´t create cine lenses.
To my eyes their lenses (or lens design) makes all the difference between a DVX or HVX and its competitors.
Cheers,
Marc

Shot is done even before I've got EVF and we've got 1:1 zoom magnification.

End of Summer or early Fall 2008.

That means was focused on LCD.

Today we have cleaning in the house, but tomorrow I'll make a brand new clip again with

"still life" using several Leica lenses because I don't have any "talent" available at the moment (it's a pity).

I want to drink that Beerenauslese!

Deal!

why does everybody think that the new primes from germany are made by leica?
