  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

First Pic of Working Fixed Lens Red Scarlet

This discussion about the side handle is interesting. I was under the impression that the DSLR form factor was somewhat awkward for shooting smooth video. I recently bought a 60D but haven't shot much handheld as yet. I was sort of thinking I wanted to put a top handle on my Scarlet (and a rail system) and shoot with more "traditional" video camera ergonomics. (And, thus would prefer a REDmote over a side handle). Yet, it seems like a lot knowledgeable people (Jarred, Ted, etc) are pretty enamored with this "side handle" shooting style. Anyone care to comment on the stability or provide some thoughts as to why it is so attractive? After all, my Scarlet will be here any day now and I have to make decisions!! :w00t:

If I had anything to do with driving this discussion down the path of criticizing the side handle, that isn't at all what I intended. I should have been more specific...

I completely see how the side handle is perfect for stills work and I would make absolutely no suggestions for changing its features. What I was asking - per my previous post - is whether the ergonomics of holding a camera, with the side handle, out in front of the body, lends itself to smooth shooting. The problem that I might anticipate (and this is why I am asking others who have shot this way) is that the fore/aft and side to side torsional movement is harder to control with a small body such as in this configuration; where small "twists" to the body are magnified in the picture and where there isn't much distributed weight to stabilize the movement. In stills work there are, of course, ways to cradle the camera close to the body and the output is single frame that is stabilized by definition. For motion shooting, I am just wondering how easy it is to shoot smooth footage this way. Does my question make sense?

RED has a machine shop... make custom handles for the two or three that think they are better designers than the RED engineers. I'm sure the cost for the custom handle would be less than the actual camera.... maybe.

Good points, Terry. I definitely will not be using the side handle. When I used my old Sony VX2000 for years, I rarely used the side (strap) handle. When working hand-held, I always held it in my two hands, almost cradling it in a way. I trust that's how I'll hold my Scarlet, too. :-)

exactly, the biggest problem with dslr's shooting handheld is that the screen can only be viewed at eye level, so you have to hold it out in front of you up high, and that's where you're least stable. there are other factors of course, but that's the main thing. so having a viewfinder or lcd that's adjustable like these will be great, and i'm thinking you can, if necessary, get some decent footage like that. or at the very least, you can put a top handle on it, and you'll definitely be good.

Hey Terry.. we actually make a outrigger handle for the opposite side of the camera as well that i don't think many of you have seen.. it really completes the package in terms of weight distribution and side to side control.. You guys really need to feel it.

Jarred - thanks for the input. I hope to get the chance to try some of this stuff before committing to a Scarlet package. BUT, that said, if there was a package available tomorrow morning, I'd take it sight unseen!! I don't imagine any of it will be "bad."

We have no plans on making higher capacity CF cards. Looks like CF has hit its limits, and when it's replacement, CFAST, finally becomes viable it likely will be another modular option for both Epic and Scarlet.. but that is likely at least a year or two away.

I can only imagine the interesting one-off equipment you all must fabricate during prototyping. An outrigger handle does sound like a logical solution.

P.S. Can we double-stack modules? For instance, could we have two SSD rear modules on one camera? Or two I/O modules?

P.P.S. - Will the ND in the fixed Scarlet be electronic or optical (i.e., an actual filter on a wheel)?

Control wheels

Control wheels

Do the various control wheels on the side handle and REDmote have click stops like most DSLRs, or are they smooth turning? This could affect how useful they are for adjusting zoom and iris. Obviously I would hope for smooth-turning.

It's fantastic to see the Scarlet Fixed working! :eek6: I can't wait to put in a deposit. Hopefully there will be a little warning before taking deposits, as it takes a few days to convert assets into cash.

If you are concerned about getting an order in, I believe you can open an Account with RED and just run a positive balance. When the product goes up for purchase, you'll already have money in your account, approved by RED and everything.

Hmm, not a bad idea. I've been hesitant to pull any money out of AAPL too early, though, since it's going up up up.

Is Scarlet compatible with the Base Production Pack available at the store, or will there be one for Scarlet ?

Scarlet will be compatible with most of the RED One base production pack but you will definitely want to buy the modules and accessories designed specifically for the DSMC system. They are not in the store yet.

yes, i think that's all confirmed, those aren't just guesses.

i'd really love to see you guys crowded around a lens trying to pull focus, iris, and zoom at the same time.

if you need doc style zooming, you'll want the autofocus anyways, or somebody helpin you out.

if you need to pull your own focus, unless you have an extra arm, i don't see you controlling a zoom at the same time, on the same lens. if it's on sticks, it would be easier to control one of those things via redmote or side handle.

if you need to adjust iris, well, i wouldn't do it mid take, but if you did have to do that, you could use the redmote or your finger on the side handle.

if you're trying to do all three at the same time, and somehow think it would be a good idea to have like, 4 or 5 people crowded around the lens, well... i just don't know what to tell you.

i'm just not seeing a lot of situations here where you need all 3 on the lens at the same time, even though we all know a lot of lenses have been that way, this is a different lens that's geared for technology. this takes it off the lens and gives you the same amount of control (and more) in a comfortable, remote location if desired.

in any case, i don't think they're going back into R&D on the lens at this point, they were really happy with it, and so am i.

I'll be open minded, of course, but if you think it's odd to bring up that having one ring might be drawback, I'm sorry.

I've never seen a camera of this quality w/ one ring. It is a different type of camera and there seem to be valid options for controlling more than one at the same time, but it's hard to keep on top of the ever changing Scarlet... even though I spend quite a bit of time here. So we'll see. Hopefully it all works well, it think it should, but there's really no way to know until the camera is locked down and released.

How do you do that? I have looked around the red.com account and see nothing.

Could this be it?

Where is the footage that is produced by Scarlet?

All those accessories discussions and concerns here are so totally void if there is no chance to see some clip.

I don't care handles, batt packs etc. as long I do not know the pic capabilities of the
camera. Sure, there a specs.... but.. heeeello?

What do I need a discussions about accessories if the Scarlet has crap footage
(I hope it will not that way).

But please... facts and pants down. Give us footage... gdmnt.

Scarlet 2/3" footage was posted months ago... more when we get a chance to breathe.
