  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

First hand with the Movi on the short "The Arborlight"

Yea its hard to judge on a showroom floor. Always best to judge once its been through the paces on a set. So this to me was invaluable. Freefly are some cool ass people. Thats all I know.

Agreed! Got to hang with Sam for a while. The kind of folks you want on your team!

Yes, Thanks for the share.

It really makes me want to dissemble my hexa copter and make something similar out of it. But as I have no time to fly it I probably have no time to make it into a 3 axis gimbal either.

My thoughts about these rigs. Offcourse the battery load will be quite heavy and as you say there is so many things that needs to run on battery, monitors, FF Video transmission etc. and holding the camera with almost straight arms kind of demands a light weight rig. So my idea would be to have a battery backpack for the guy holding the camera, something that can power the whole rig trough a cable that goes up the bar and along the arm of the operator. If he has a quite heavy battery it would also work somewhat as a counter weight to the camera load.

Even the controler guy could offload most to a backpack and even have a client screen on that backpack so the director can stand behind him and watch an own screen and also give some direction to the camera RC guy. I guess also the RC guy would need a mic and the operator carrying the camera would need an ear peace to hear what the RC guy and the director says.

Also it would be interesting to see a novice work with the movi on a Steady arm. Just to see if it's a possible solution even for non trained steady cam operators. As I think a steady arm/west would help to take the load off and also would dampening the x,y,z movment of the camera which I think would heavily improve to remove the some times felt camera man stepping feeling.

Also im really quirius to see movi or any other of these brands make an additional rope axis. so these things can be hooked and race along wires. A single wire system that can run on a slack rope would be really handy, something that could just snap on to the handle bar and had a motor to run a rubber wheel against a rope all controlled by the RC.

Really want to buy one of these but I do not have the time to play with it and I'm sure prices will fall like rocks in thin air so I guess I wait and rent when they get out. Really eager to play with one though.

Keep in mind that this is the prototype version i was testing, there has been lots of mods to the actual shipping model. I wouldnt be surprised if lots of these things make it into that design :)

Hearing you say "I wouldn't rent it out" makes me wonder if it'll ever be a "rentable" item in the rental houses.

All that wiring, points of connection, powering...I can definitely hear clients calling back asking to trouble shoot the issue.

As for battery, when can we get a hold of some solar panel battery set-ups =)

One day, there will be 1 tiny battery to rule them all....one day...

I'm waiting to see the production model before I make any real claims. There have been some changes that will make it much more user friendly. but had we not had Sam there, it would have been nearly impossible to figure out. Though I'm sure that'll change otherwise it wouldn't be a very good product. Hang tight and wait for the production model.

Another question , whats the longest lens that you would be comfortable using on the movie?

Put it this way, Id be just as comfortable running a 100mm as i would an 18mm. We had a 100 on set and worked great as far as stabilization. Id say you could probably even do a 200, but probably only a photo lens as cine 200 would destroy it for weight

Wow that is impressive shooting with a 100mm.
Nothing to do with the Movi, in this next question.
Which system was dropping first? the REDrock or the teredek bolt?
Is this the limitation of a 2.4 GHz ISM band?

The Teradek was definitely the one causing all the ruckus. Though Teradek may be sending me another unit to test and make sure thats not the case. But the one we had was def buggy.

It's been my experience that the Bolt doesn't go through walls, and the Parralinx does.

On this set we would barely get 20ft in dead line of sight. :( still have yet to try paralinx.

Domenic, thanks for this info.

Couple of questions:

What was the average length of up-time between a given battery changeover?
Did you develop a changeover schedule to maximise up-time?
Was the MōVI battery powering the Epic?
Are there any 'majestic mode' shots in this video?

Freefly say the production model will be more rigid and wider (now fits a side-handle on the Epic) and carry slightly more - 12 pounds up from 10.

Cheers :-)

Jake, that is just plain untrue. The Paralinx Arrow and Teradek Bolt use a very similar chipset, if not the same. We run into the same RF problems, just like the others in the market.

Also want to add that Bolt operates over 5GHz, not 2.4GHz.

From what I understand the the new model will hold more weight. the side handle is a much needed accessory without the touch screen. Battery times varied all the time. Nothing was every really guessable. each battery taking more or less of a draw so it was always random. And yea there are a couple shots running through the forrest that were majestic, just use of the follow focus.

I've never had them both on the same set, but I had problems with the bolt and walls recently, it's possible there was other interference. I've had the arrow go through walls several times. But who knows, maybe it was the particular location.
