  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

First Glimpse of Epic Tattoo?

Not sure I even get what "info like this" you are talking about. Jim and Jarred are shooting with a couple of Epics - something they have been doing now for weeks. What would there be arguments about? (Of course, this group could perhaps find something! :001_huh: )

Yeah. Without disrespect, it's not the first glimpse of the EPIC tattoo. We saw and shot with a couple of tattoos at RED Day (even though it wasn't operating under the name). We saw pictures and video of the tattoo with Jarred in NYC shooting fashion models. We saw Ted and Jarred at Cinegear and Jarred shared a few framegrabs that were pulled from the .r3d files shot by random people who wanted to "borrow" the EPIC.

I appreciate new pics being reposted on REDuser just like we all do, though.

the best bit of info gleaned from that pic was a quick reassurance as to the state of jims health

I would say it is. They aren't Tattoos until they are given to their owner and we all know that Mark gets the first ones. If they are in Jim or Jarred's or Ted's possession I would call them working prototypes. I think there is a difference.

I'm betting Mark got to take at least one home with him after the shoot....

there is an even bigger hint on the post that jarred is pointing his EPIC at. follow the lens ... vertical letters
DUH!

Yeah, I didn't want to spell it out for everyone, but it's public knowledge now in another thread.

Wonder if this is for next season of Ultimate Fighter. That would be cool.

Hi Steve,

I've DIT'd a couple of TVC's for the X-B0X UFC 2010 launch and UFC interviews for the "So you want to be a fighter" promo in the last month or two here in the west, I know they had some more fighters to do in other areas of the country.

Cheers,

Steve

I repeat again: NAB 2011.

RED does't need to rush just because some people want EPIC desperately today or even early tomorrow.

It's a real to wait till early 2011.

There are a lot of things to be done and also fixed till then.

R1MX is enough good camera for the next couple of years even when Monstro enters the stage then we can call it R1-Monstro cam.

Advise: KEEP SUPER-COOL guys!!!

I just got my MX upgrade today, so I'm now I'm completely with you Sanjin, I'm set until the Epic is rock solid and ready for prime time.

I think the problem is there are a decent amount of people who are now losing business to Canon DSLR...that is why a lot of people are asking for a faster release of EPIC. I myself have had a few clients who were RED advocate switch to Canon DSLRs (I just lost one more client today as a matter of fact)...now I personally don't care as I think the DSLR don't even come close to RED and I still have enough business to not worry about it....but there is a fundamental shift in people's perception and right now shooting DSLR seems to be the hot thing...the competition cannot be ignored (even though it's a far inferior competition IMHO) but sometimes you can miss your window of opportunity if you are not careful. I am not saying RED should rush everything out, but I don't believe waiting til 2011 would be a wise move either....

If your losing RED business to 5d's (On a price basis which os the only basis people are losing business on it really) how will having an Epic make things different, its a more expensive cam than the One.....

A friend of mine who runs a rental place says that by the time you've outfitted a 5D with all the gear to make it work like a cine camera, it costs about as much as a basic R1 kit.

And I think that a lot of people who chose the 5D over the R1 (for rental) do so not primarily for cost reasons, but for the form factor, weight and low light performance.

Well, Jim said that he'd be very unhappy if SCARLET didn't get released by summer. Since Scarlet is trailing behind the Epic, I'd be very, very surprised if we'd have to wait til NAB next year.

And Jarred said if the Scarlet wasn't out by May '11, RED would probably go out of business.

What's happening with 5D/7Ds is that it starts off as a B-Cam and then the word spreads that it's a lightweight, yet good quality camera that is very accessible and suddenly it starts to make some waves and like RED more people start to use it and it infiltrates sets. In some situations, I've seen the director take over a lot of the shooting while the DP hung out waiting. I guess the director felt pretty comfortable with the 5D. So, there is some DSLR saturation at the moment, especially in commercials and music videos. Epic and Scarlet will have the edge when they are released because you will get all of the benefits of the DSLR, yet have a very robust codec and the ability to use it as a real video camera.
Until then, I think the R1 will be used as it has been, the DSLRs will fill in the gaps while people wait for Epic/Scarlet, and life is good. Options abound.

Price is not the only factor in losing business. It appear form factor has something to do with it as well. I guess being smaller and much lighter is allowing certain productions to do things faster (and cheaper) and not having to rely on more expensive gears that need to support a heavier camera...at least that is what I am told! Also with EPIC new sensor, Size factor, and new very high speed shooting at 5k and 4k, I think it maybe enough to have people pay extra again (I can now tell them "hey it has the form factor and ease of use of the DSLR that you like plus all those other features...)
We personally don't intend to increase our prices when we get our EPICS (they will be priced the same as were our RED Ones)

This was said regarding the EPIC as far as I remember. And Scarlet is trailing behind EPIC.
