  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

First buyable 8K TV !

2 years. It looks like 4K will be nothing more than a stepping stone to 8K.

Exactly what I have said for some years : 4K is just a step. Like HD (720p) was just a step before FHD (1080p). Even the names make us feel like a dejà vu : UHD (2160p) and Full Ultra HD (4320p).

;-)

OK lets talk in two years hahahaha
Have you seen any 4K content lately?...- yeah I thought so.
do you think that in two years there could be enough content to support 8k display market?
with what camera?
you guys are funny ;-))))))

I first saw 720p just before 1080p. 4K won't last at all. NHK has understood that far before any of us :-)

I think that almost all big camera manufacturers will have a 8K cam in two years.

Yup. Although the current infrastructure limits 8K's deployment, this could rapidly change in 2 years with new codecs (h265), higher bandwidth connections (4g? 5g? Coax will hit 1gbps soon, Vectored DSL up to 600mbps, optic fibers).

4K will be the "thing" for a few years, but once 8K is up and running....

Yep.

Yes, i have. Mostly timelapses though. ;-p

The interesting situation now is that we have 8K displays before we have 8K content. This is what kept 4K from being mainstream sooner. The infrastructure +cameras were there, but the displays weren't.

Don't forget Japan is making a massive push for 8K broadcast in 2016. They're investing a ton of money into the 2020 olympics to be broadcast in 8K.

Yeah, I was under the impression that HDR is the new "in" thing for a better viewing experience (since the audience doesn't really seem to care about resolution.)

HDR will most likely make 8k irrelevant from a content delivery standpoint to the home. Unless you sit very close to a big screen. :)

From a content acquisition standpoint, that is another matter and I welcome 8k to create 4k delivery.

:-)

We discussed this relevance on the Canon 8K camera post. I posted a schema made by ARRI.

The better resolution, the closer people sit to watch content. And I dont't know if you have already seen a 8K in person, but it is like watching a window. 8K + big angle of vision = immersion ;-)

It is not HDR OR 8K. The future is HDR AND 8K.

Tell that to true IMAX viewers ;-)

People cares about resolution. But the absence of 4K optical disc is the problem. Streaming 4K requiers large bandwith and the content is still too limited.

There is a lot more to creating a content than a camera sensor. I hope you realize that. Yes the camera is first. And there isn't one yet haha!!!!
It took 8 years from Reds first attempt to becoming main stream for camera manufacturers. And we are still far from having enough content to support 4K display market.
In fact we have just recently got decent 1080p with 4444
If history is any indication we will be well into the next decade before anything significant happens with 8K

This is correct.

However, 4K is not a "stepping stone" really (mentioned on the previous thread). You'll be seeing it nearly everywhere for some time. Likely the next 7-10 years easily. Perhaps beyond.

Around 2020-2022? You'll be seeing a bit more of 8K "in the home".

I won't mention names, but there's been talk about a specific display manufacturer who might stop producing 1080p screens to focus on 4K products in 2016.

There will be one at the end of the year. Do you think you need 10 years to produce content with a cam ? Watch on imdb the movie shot on Alexa 65...in 2016 some movies will be shot on Weapon 8k.

Red did a 4K cam in a HD world. You are totally wrong. You compare apple to orange. Compare 720p and 1080p. It's no more HD gen. It's UHD gen.

8K will be a standard in the future. But I can say that about flying cars.

I`m really hoping pixel quality becomes fashionable soon.

And as soon as 8K hits, there will be talk of 28K and then whatever new tech emerges after that. Thing is, these short product cycles and cheaper pricing seems to make marketing the next big thing even more necessary. Hopefully some day the focus will turn to what actually looks good. I'm not oposed to 8K, but I don't see 4K or 8K getting the kind of saturation that HD has,at least not for a while.

However, for acquisition I think any improvements in image capturing are welcome, even if the deliverable specs are less.

Talk is cheap. Go and create 8K content if you think it will be popular in two years ;-) Oh wait- there is not a camera that can do that. And the upcoming one will be maybe here by next NAB. But wait- still no editing programs to deal with the content. Oh wait- still no computers that can deal with 33mpix frames at 24,30, 60 per second. Oh wait- no 8K display systems (projectors for movie theaters) that can show it. Oh wait- no DC standards that define the quality. etc, etc, etc, Again- talk is cheap hahahaha ;-)

See Milano Post.

Moreover, I have never said that 8K is now. I have said that 8K comes, and far sooner than everyone think. And I think Milano is right, 2 years is a good guess.
