First Adult Movie Shot on RED

I really enjoyed Australia in 2000. Great country, great people. The people are upbeat and friendly. Aussies work to live, not live to work!!

Without a doubt, it was the best Olympics I ever worked!!

If you visit, takes Lots of One Dollar bills, they really come in handy.....:reddevil:

Different scenario... you blokes shot most of the Indigenous Indians and then imported slaves from Africa.....later having a civil war killing each other over it.....Australian Aboriginals have had a better deal.

Very interesting viewpoint. However all of the folks who did those things are dead now. Funnier still is the fact that I began reading your post thinking that you were saying that Aiden staged these things in some of his adult films. Silly me.

Man this is not an adult movie - it is just a porn movie! I beg to differ!!
I love to watch movies which are not made for kids to understand and I don't mean porn by that! I wouldn't say that Apocalypse Now is made for kids but rather for adults! :banghead:

When you say
Man this is not an adult movie
do you mean to suggest that I should show it to my young children? It clearly is an adult film.

"Adult Film" has long been accepted as one of the nice ways of saying porn. :chillpill:

If Kurtz threw a bone to one of those indigenous types in a scene, it would look just like this movie. :-) [That was a joke people. No offense was intended to Patrick, purveyors of adult film or least of all Vittorio Storaro.]

Dude I know about those piteous efforts to call things in a more nice way. It's unworthy of a mature adult and just as silly as those beeps over the word f*ck. Porns are just what I said above - point.

@Scott: Don't put words (or things) into my mouth that I didn't say  But I'm a european...

Dude, I wasn't putting those words into your mouth, I was asking if it was your intention to suggest such a thing... hence the question mark. The idea was to illustrate that porn is in fact adult fare when you seemed to suggest that it wasn't. I assume that you didn't really mean it that way. I was simply using sarcasm to drive the point home. I'm sorry if it crashed through your front door.

How would the style be different - I'm curious to hear how autofocus influences the shooting style.

I was talking about subtle differences. The way one controls focus, for example, how smooth the transition is, and how will it look in editing. Also, occasionally one misses focus by a tad and re-focuses, which is often seen on any type of footage and maybe for this purpose that would be unwanted.

If you can predict how camera will behave and your shot doesn't need creative/predicitive manual focusing you can concentrate more on framing, following and camera movement rhythm.

1.) I would never ever call autofocus "smooth", practical at times, maybe, but not "smooth" - or have you never had a shot ruined by an autofocus pumping between two nearby focus points? (Whenever I have to use a small camera, the first thing I do is switch off the auto-focus.)

Of course I had auto focus ruining a shot. Also, I had situations where I lost important shot in unpredictable circumstances where I didn't have enough time to judge whether the shot was in focus or not, which is easier to perceive on a 2/3" (at least for me), but 1/3" can be tricky in a fast shoot.
That's why I use it depending on a situation. I don't see this as either one or the other. I'm constantly switching between manual/auto because I know how my camera will behave and which mode is more suitable for which type of shot.

2.) For the first 70 years of film making there was no such thing as auto-focus; all newsreels, and quite a big chunk of all the other productions were focus-pulled by the operator, and those were all 35mm projects. Today, many documentaries are shot with a single cameraman without a puller at hand. Yes, there are many with smaller sensor sizes, but if you use RED's edge highlighting feature, you can get satisfactory results, with a trained eye and hand.

So basically you are saying that due to the fact that no auto focusing was available in the first 70 years of film everyone should go manual for every type of shoot ?

You can get great results with RED, naturally.

Would I use at this stage and pull my own focus while shooting dancing crowd at the club wide open ? No. But I did.
What I also did was bring another cam and got the rest of the footage I would miss if I shot only with RED by myself. Also, reviewing clips and editing is faster and more creative when you don't have to review 2 min shot for a 2 sec of a girl dancing in focus @ T2. x150 shots.

Would I use it to shoot a carpenter repairing antique furniture and moving frantically through the room while singing opera - with no chance to repeat the shot? No. And I didn't.
Shoot a concert with 8 band members 5 of which are jumping around ? No. And I didn't.
Shoot a b-boy crew dancing ? No. And I didn't.

Did I think about 70 years of film making and how they shot things then ? No. I thought about footage and what I have to do to get the best results, it's quality and quantity and how editable it will be.

Can it be done ? Yes. Would I recommend it for every secenario ? No.
That's why I'm eagerly awaiting 2/3" Scarlet for the shoots where I don't need 35mm. I will use both auto and manual, depending on what the scene needs and what I want it to look like.

First Adult Movie Shot on RED

I predicted this would happen when I first heard about RED. Blue movies on RED = RedPorn, a new subgenre. :arf:

and...

Cheers Dave. I'm an Aussie and you're spot on! You'd better return one day but with your old dollar pieces (coins) they're more popular! Trinkets for the natives.

Héhé, funny. Let me tell you how I got to see my first porn, accidentaly, at the age of 9:

I saw Forever Young on a film paying channel in Belgium, you know, the movie with Mel Gibson. Already at that age I was a little movie buff, so I wanted to tape it, because I really liked it.
The same channel was always showing (not that I knew at the time) a porn movie around 00AM, 01 AM. So that same day, they showed Forever Young 'again', I could see in the television guide, at 1 AM. I thought that was strange, because they would never play the same movie on one day.
There was a symbol next to 'that' Forever Young and I looked up in the guide what it meant. It meant: Erotic movie.
I asked my older brother what an 'erotic' movie was. He said: " It's a movie for adults.".
I thought to myself, because I had already seen lots of horrorfilms: "Hmm... Forever Young didn't had really much blood into it. Maybe they are overreacting...."

So at night, my parents went out, it was weekend or so, don't remember it exactly, my older brother upstairs. Me... taping 'my movie with Mel Gibson'.
The movie opened with an extreme close-up. LOL, I didn't even understand what it all was. My parents entered the house, asking what the hell I was watching. I could only stumble: "A science fiction movie with Mel Gibson... I think?"
Aahhh... My first encounter with porn, trough my obsession with movies.
My parents could laugh about the incident though. We had a pretty open education at home.

Couldn't resist bringing up that memory, seeing this discussion.

XXX-Files parody

In case anyone was wondering, Digital Playground has released several more new titles shot with the RED camera system and they do look better than the first attempt. Not that any of you are probably focusing on the cinematography while watching those anyway.

i definitely wouldn't watch it for resolution....

Oh, don't even start.

I don't understand this sort of statements. Is there a genre of movies that you would watch "for resolution" instead, and why?

Isn't image quality of a camera/format enough for a movie to be shot on it, or
are we still arguiing why one should shoot a movie on Red? So, apart from the surprise of something relatively new, what's the fact that this time it's a porn got to do with any specific technical arguments? Or maybe porn movies do not deserve being shot with cinemagraphic tools.. or may be porn movies for some reasons do not look /feel good on Red?
Would it be better if the movie was shot on different camera?
That could be interestng discussion. But if you really have some feelings to express, please go beyond saying that you are not watching a porn movie for resolution, because that's so obvious. No one has ever watched any kind of movie for resolution, for that matter.
We don't really want to be trapped with the sterile approach such as "is better quality a good thing?" anymore, every time we hear something realatively new.
Some just seem to need to discuss , or rather comment, anything for the sake of it, reducing anything to atoms but without going deep at all. 99% at reduser is bar talking of the most superficial level, on and on and on.
