First Adult Movie Shot on RED

The morals by which we rate films are totally twisted. We show violent murder all the time on TV but sex is banned unless it's just the objectification of women generally, in which case that's fine for a music video at any hour of the day for any person of any age to watch. This crazy world.

In Western Australia it is illegal to film and distribute hard core porn.
You can film "simulated" intercourse but not allowed to show penetration.
It's still 1945 here

I've heard about things like this. It's weird, in the US (or maybe I should limit that to my friends in central California, tend to think of Australia as liberated and forward thinking, but this isn't the first time I've heard about weird porn attitudes and open racism and such (not including all Aussies in that, of course). It more and more occurs to me that the whole world is fucked up in varying degrees.

True the majority of porn is garbage, but we (the porn industry) are not making porn for "artists". We make it for people to masturbate to... and the MAJORITY of people masturbate to people fucking, not an intellectually stimulating story, unfortunately.

But doesn't this go both ways - the audience is by now "educated" to expect nothing more of a porn than exactly an almost endless row of f*cking sessions glued together by a story that could be told in less than 2 sentences.

Maybe there is a market for "intellectual" porn?

Anyway, not that I would know any of this, of course :emote_hippie:

Even though I bought a RED, I still primarily shoot my porn with the HVX200. I mostly just mess around with the RED and shoot inanimate things around my house for fun. I have shot some "lead ups" with the RED, and one scene with it, but to be honest. You can't shoot an uninterrupted sex scene using a one-maned camera without auto-focus. You would end up losing the passion and energy your two performers are giving and end up with something like... the movie this thread is about.

Aiden, which flicks have you made? :emote_popcorn:

:

You bet there would be for pornumentary (I'm serious):
1) "Alaskan Beaver Hunt: The Sarah Palin Family Chronicles"
2) "Southern Comforts: The Mark Sanford Affair"
3) "The Blue Dress Interview: Bill's Stain on the Presidency"
4) "Bunker Buster: The Hilter-Braun Perversion"
5) "The Honorable Women of Camelot: JFK's Mistresses"
6) "Pursuit of Power, Legacy of Lust: The Conquests of Silvio Berlusconi"

And why didn't some enterprising pornographer make after hours use of the sets of HBO's "ROME" and other similar opportunities to make some gorgeous XXX porn?

Maybe there is a market for "intellectual" porn?

An audience? Sure. A market? Doubtful.

Let's break it down, shall we?

There are two major types of porn.

Gonzo and Feature.

Gonzo sells many more pieces than Features do, over all. Yes there have been features that have outsold gonzo movies, but typically a gonzo will outsell a feature.

A gonzo can cost an average of 20k - 25k to make, depending on locations / talent / sex acts.

A feature can cost upward of $100k.

As you can see, the profit margin for making a feature is VERY low.

So, unless there was someone who has a HUGE passion and SKILL to make a beautiful, intellectual porn movie, why would anyone do it? It's just not worth it... and IF that person was capable, why wouldn't he/she just make a hollywood movie and retrieve a bigger profit?

And the same thing happens in Hollywood, they want to maximize their profits, not makes movies for the sake of art. Otherwise, you wouldn't see movies like Friday the 13th remake, casting their "token" ethnic characters. They're trying to reach the broadest audience to maximize their return on investment, when if were up to the sake of art, I'm pretty sure you would have seen a MUCH different movie.

When I look at real life, I don't see the crowds hang out together that you see in Hollywood movies.

I'm sure a lot of experienced (documentary / concert / corporate / eng / efp) operators would beg to differ.

So then you're staying an experienced docu/concert/etc camera operator could just as easily shoot a Hollywood Blockbuster?

I don't believe that just because you have experience shooting one thing, that makes you experienced in shooting another, if this were the case, you would see better porn shot. The people who shoot porn aren't retarded and unskillful, they just shoot what they like to see, at least in my case. Not everyone is going to be a fan of the way they shoot.

"porn is garbage"

not when veronica hart was around (on the screen) those were the days

hollywood's boogie nights

Australia has racism, sure, but no more than most cities around the world.
Country Australia is a different story, we get along out here in the scrub.

Good and experienced cam op with a 2/3" could pull it without any problem, but the style of shooting would be slightly different.
Larger sensor and smaller DOF are a different thing, though, and expecting this to go as smooth and as practical as auto focus is expecting too much.

Versatile people with many different experiences posses adaptive skills. For better quality I'd first turn to director and editor.

This industry is fast food and as such prioritizes quantity over quality. You don't have to be retarded and unskillful for final cut to turn out lousy. If the standards are low, your potential is being limited.

The 4 times I've been to Australia, I experienced far more racism against blacks than the 13 years I've lived in California.

How would the style be different - I'm curious to hear how autofocus influences the shooting style.

1.) I would never ever call autofocus "smooth", practical at times, maybe, but not "smooth" - or have you never had a shot ruined by an autofocus pumping between two nearby focus points? (Whenever I have to use a small camera, the first thing I do is switch off the auto-focus.)
2.) For the first 70 years of film making there was no such thing as auto-focus; all newsreels, and quite a big chunk of all the other productions were focus-pulled by the operator, and those were all 35mm projects. Today, many documentaries are shot with a single cameraman without a puller at hand. Yes, there are many with smaller sensor sizes, but if you use RED's edge highlighting feature, you can get satisfactory results, with a trained eye and hand.

Different scenario... you blokes shot most of the Indigenous Indians and then imported slaves from Africa.....later having a civil war killing each other over it.....Australian Aboriginals have had a better deal.
