I noticed we have a firmware update. I have the previous firmware. 5.3.42 firmware I believe. Is there any downsides of the update. I can't recall exactly but someone on the boards mentioned there was a few issues but I can't recall where I saw that thread.

Any info is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

EDIT: Just found out what I read was the RED Brick batteries may show voltage only. Right now mine will show voltage, percentage and time remaining.

If you do not need the features of a new update and your camera is working great. Don't. But there comes a point when you should update. I normally do the firmware updates as far a part as possible. Also as I am sure you know. Never update when you have an upcoming shoot. Do it on the downtime and test it out.

Don't fix what isn't broken is my method. Especially as Erick mentioned, dnot do it the night befire a shoot etc!

Nearly every new firmware release temporarily breaks almost all 3rd party software, as new firmware often contains features that are not supported by the current Red SDK that third party developers use and rely on. If you're using only Redcine X - which is updated in lock step with new firmware releases - that's not an issue. But if you're using or working with others who are using any third party tools - and that would include everything from Colorfront to DaVinci to Adobe to Avid to Filmlight and everyone in between - there is a reasonably good chance they either might have a problem reading the files, or more likely will not be able to duplicate all of the settings you use in camera (Dragoncolor2, for instance, was only supported in the third party SDK very, very recently and is still unavailable in a number of those aforementioned third party tools). So consider your collaborators and potential collaborators when deciding to update firmware prior to or during a project.

my focus peaking now doesnt work since update. help how do i fix this

Did you map it to a key? If so, it likely got "wiped" when you upgraded your firmware. It should be available in the Tools menu under the drop down.

In the future it's best to create a preset for your settings and save them to the media before you upgrade your firmware. After you upgrade you can load the preset and all your hotkeys are right where you set them at.

Phil have the lens issues been fixed yet? I updated once and rolled back immediately after reading that every firmware has had issues with Canon glass in recent months.

I mainly shoot with PL glass, but recently shot something with the 35mm f/1.4L and it didn't freak out. I would need to test "all the things" though to figure out what's up.

Gotcha. After that initial test and failure i've followed the threads and it seems like some still have issues. Like someone else said before, why fix it if it ain't broken. I'll stand pat and follow whats happening.

I always upgrade to the new release software. I use to upgrade to the beta but in my old age I'm not so adventurous. The golden rule, test, test, test! With red you may want to add another test to that.

RED cameras don't have focus peaking. Unless I am doing something wrong. They also don't allow you to move while punched in either.

It does but its hard to find. i turned it to a soft key so its easy to use.

Have you tried settings>display>tools>FOCUS? I think that's what the sub menus are called. Don't have it in front of me now. But the focus option is among the Exposure check, false color (video), etc. the focus tool is peaking or is very similar to it.

You will also see a small F and a tick next to it between exposure and temp.

If you're on a touch, you can touch the histogram and that will take you directly to the tools menu. Focus, "view RAW", false colors etc.
Pretty quick, really.

Yes the red menus can be daunting but once you know them you realize it's all laid out fairly well
