Any word on if FCP X will handle Red Footage more efficiently...?!?

try SEARCH: lots of threads on this... including the entire keynote...

answer: apparently and not sure how. they dont get specific enough

I was at the Supermeet and i can tell you that they mentioned pretty much everything from Canon and Nikon up to Phantom - but they specifically DID NOT mention Red or R3d - which I found a bit suspicious. Others who claim to know stuff assure me Red hasn't been forgotten. I'll believe it when I see it. Apple is not the kind of company that forgets to mention something as significant as Red support. And they had three opportunities to include Red in their list. Felt like a pointed omission to me but I've bee wrong before.

That said, for anyone with Resolve, I feel it's a bit moot. Pristine, first gen ProRes 4:4:4:4 4k output works for me...

Hey, nice meeting you there, Bettsy!

I wouldn't worry about R3D support for a few reasons...

* It's easy to support and implement with the current SDK.
* Everyone else supports it.
* Apple would be shooting themselves in the foot if they didn't.
* FCP supports it now, even natively, after wrapping it in a QT.

There's a lot of formats that were not mentioned that a lot of people want/need to see support for. They only touched on H264, mentioned Phantom to kinda drive home the point of support. They didn't make any mention of DVCPro[HD], R3D, ARRI-RAW, and dozens of others that people are using today. Just saying...

Lots of people were dazzled by the preview. It does look like a nice upgrade that is long overdue. Many of the features they have shown are already available in some form in other apps. Some of the new features are very much Apple.

One of the most significant line items they mentioned, which seemed to (surprisingly) get very little reaction from the crowd, was the native format support and no longer any need to transcode or wrap into QT. They were dropping H264s right onto the timeline in the middle of ProRes clips. So on that note, it's nice to see Apple's FCP guys have accepted it's no longer 1998. ;)

Hey Jeff, right back atcha mate. Great to finally put a face to the name.

As we were discussing on the night, we have Resolve here at Roar and my first reaction to FCPX was, "here's our finishing app sorted". The XML roundtrip ensures that - even if you are only ever working in ProRes 4k in FCPX - you are always working in pristine, first generation ProRes 4k. Beautiful! These kinds of codecs only really cause issues, IMHO, when you start going down generations.

As for editorial, the changes they've brought to FCP are going to make it fabulous for long form work (assuming the metadata stuff actually works and doesn't break under the strain of a big project). Same thing with the magnetic timeline. Very cool.

So yeah, I am hopeful that R3d support will flow in there somewhere and, as they shift more work off to the GPU, this leaves more CPU cycles for that kind of processing - even without a Red Rocket. But frankly, given where we are right now (or in June, more accurately) I'm a very happy camper. Editing in ProRes is rock solid and doing the transcode is fairly painless (and happens on-set for us). Cutting with R3d's will need to prove very, very compelling before I'll feel the need to change. So long as we can grade from the R3d's all is well with my world. Editing R3d will just be cream...

Thats scary...
Just imaging if Apple does not jump onto the RED post wagon...
That would mean a serious change of direction for me... I hate to say the word Arri in the forum. But if they bring out a 4k LOG PRORES output...
I so hope it was just a Apple slip up. (gulp)

You an me both

I'm right there with you guys.
The new Final Cut could be the holy grail of editing our RED files. I'm sure Apple will do it right this time. No more gamma shifts with Prores and I'm a damn happy camper.
Now think Color for a second. I'm sure they have something great in the works. I guess everything will be on the same timeline at the end. That would rock big time.

July will be the month of the month this year. We all get our Epics and the new Final Cut will kick ass. I sooooo hope that.
Live ist good...is it?

Ah yeah and I hope Mark gets his "M" soon. I can feel ya everytime you post here. I can't overhear your slight stingy subtone. Don't worry we all know how you mean it and feel exactly the same way.

Cheers Mate

i am not sure at all .
a 300 usd app from apple could potentially contain sooooo many bugs and missing features for professional editor community ...

it might even be that they invented sooo many new tools to make editing easier ...but it might even be that the in depth feature for pro are missing and their target is the prosumer filmmakers (and they clearly demonstrated in the last few years ...) like : spend 1K on your camera , spend 1K on your computer , spend 300usd and your editing app and you have a "Movie" done ...

hope not ...but this FCX it might be like ....Quicktime 7--->QuicktimeX (new and cooler ...but missing features for the PRO user ...)

again hope not ,but i would not be so surprised if that was the case , apple clairly demonstrated to have forgotten the PRO post production user in the last 3 years ...

Well, Apple has shot themselves in the foot many times in their spotted history... I wouldn't put it past them. They don't like to rely too heavily on 3rd party tech, or apparently to pay royalties on proprietary codecs. Direct editing of R3D would mean doing both. I too would expect their kind of 4k support to mean a couple new flavors of ProRes perhaps, but I don't expect native R3D editing from them, particularly where it was clearly omitted. It could just be that it is still in negotiations but I'm not holding my breath. I would sooner expect a song and dance about the benefits of a closed ecosystem yadda yadda... (Not to suggest that such a philosophy is wrong, mind you.)

The most interesting aspect of the new version is that they seem to be moving away from the mouse and keyboard. This new direction suggests an iPad as input device alternative coming, or other kinds of gesture based input.

Now your really scaring me...

Three words.

GAMMA BUG STATUS?

But did they officially state whether the $299 version would include Motion, Color, etc? Because there's speculation it would not -- and those would be extra apps that need to be purchased as well via the Mac App store. If this is the case, the real price of the FCP Studio package would actually be pretty close to past editions.

Like everyone here, I'm praying for better Red/4k compatibility and support. With the majority of Redusers being Mac users ... and give the imminent popularity of Epic and Scarlet -- I think they would be soooooooooooo dumb not to have better prioritized Red in this edition.

We'll find out soon enough, I guess ...
