I was at the Supermeet and i can tell you that they mentioned pretty much everything from Canon and Nikon up to Phantom - but they specifically DID NOT mention Red or R3d - which I found a bit suspicious. Others who claim to know stuff assure me Red hasn't been forgotten. I'll believe it when I see it. Apple is not the kind of company that forgets to mention something as significant as Red support. And they had three opportunities to include Red in their list. Felt like a pointed omission to me but I've bee wrong before.
That said, for anyone with Resolve, I feel it's a bit moot. Pristine, first gen ProRes 4:4:4:4 4k output works for me...
Hey Jeff, right back atcha mate. Great to finally put a face to the name.
As we were discussing on the night, we have Resolve here at Roar and my first reaction to FCPX was, "here's our finishing app sorted". The XML roundtrip ensures that - even if you are only ever working in ProRes 4k in FCPX - you are always working in pristine, first generation ProRes 4k. Beautiful! These kinds of codecs only really cause issues, IMHO, when you start going down generations.
As for editorial, the changes they've brought to FCP are going to make it fabulous for long form work (assuming the metadata stuff actually works and doesn't break under the strain of a big project). Same thing with the magnetic timeline. Very cool.
So yeah, I am hopeful that R3d support will flow in there somewhere and, as they shift more work off to the GPU, this leaves more CPU cycles for that kind of processing - even without a Red Rocket. But frankly, given where we are right now (or in June, more accurately) I'm a very happy camper. Editing in ProRes is rock solid and doing the transcode is fairly painless (and happens on-set for us). Cutting with R3d's will need to prove very, very compelling before I'll feel the need to change. So long as we can grade from the R3d's all is well with my world. Editing R3d will just be cream...
Well, Apple has shot themselves in the foot many times in their spotted history... I wouldn't put it past them. They don't like to rely too heavily on 3rd party tech, or apparently to pay royalties on proprietary codecs. Direct editing of R3D would mean doing both. I too would expect their kind of 4k support to mean a couple new flavors of ProRes perhaps, but I don't expect native R3D editing from them, particularly where it was clearly omitted. It could just be that it is still in negotiations but I'm not holding my breath. I would sooner expect a song and dance about the benefits of a closed ecosystem yadda yadda... (Not to suggest that such a philosophy is wrong, mind you.)
The most interesting aspect of the new version is that they seem to be moving away from the mouse and keyboard. This new direction suggests an iPad as input device alternative coming, or other kinds of gesture based input.
hope not ...but this FCX it might be like ....Quicktime 7--->QuicktimeX (new and cooler ...but missing features for the PRO user ...)

But did they officially state whether the $299 version would include Motion, Color, etc? Because there's speculation it would not -- and those would be extra apps that need to be purchased as well via the Mac App store. If this is the case, the real price of the FCP Studio package would actually be pretty close to past editions.
Like everyone here, I'm praying for better Red/4k compatibility and support. With the majority of Redusers being Mac users ... and give the imminent popularity of Epic and Scarlet -- I think they would be soooooooooooo dumb not to have better prioritized Red in this edition.
We'll find out soon enough, I guess ...
