  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Final Cut Pro X Released

Support for keeping the old version seems like an implicit admission that this version doesn't serve pro needs, at least not yet. At best, it will take months to add all the missing features. At worst, they won't come at all.

If Apple doesn't want to lose the pros that use FCP, and they do actually plan to extend the functionality of FCPx to fit the needs of professionals, then they need to release a roadmap for Final Cut Pro X immediately. But knowing Apple this is not likely...

Just to tantalize you all while we get it ready to post, here's the intro to Gary's article:

FCP X: READY OR NOT, IT’S HERE

I’ll be honest. When I first opened FCP X, my first title for this article was, “What the @#%, Ap-ple?!”

Let’s get the hard part out of the way first. FCP X is NOT an upgrade to Final Cut Pro 7. This is a whole new app, literally built from the ground up. Here’s one thing that this means: upgrades traditionally allow you to open previous projects. That is not allowed here, so let’s just call this a whole new app.

This release is not for the professional editor, not yet. Apple knows this – BOY, does Ap-ple know, and they understand that if they want to make this useful for pro editors they have a short window to deliver some of what’s missing.

The main issues for most pro editors now: no support for any tape based capture, no third-party hardware support, and no third-party codec support. That means that you cannot send or receive an EDL or XML file for online editing or finishing.

Apple has been very specific, that this is not the final state of FCP X. Features are ex-pected to be added quickly, via the App Store, with some of them waiting to show up natively in OS X Lion and with support for Thunderbolt.

Once we get past the knee-jerk reactions (like mine was), the fact is there’s a lot to like about FCP X right now. The GUI has naturally received the most attention so far, but I’d like to show you some of what’s going on underneath the hood.

Some of it has to do with 64-bit speed that you’re not going to believe, but I’m going to start with our old friend, FCP media management. Even more important, is the information about your media, called metadata. The changes that Apple has made will change the future of non-linear editing for film, video and digital cinema professionals, with power that high-end pros have only been dreaming of.

Okay, let the questions begin!

If apple didn't care about the pro community why take it to NAB to show to the FCP user group, why bother trying to show it to a select group of industry pros and court the opinions of a guy like Walter Murch?
This is a brand new Final Cut and has been out for a matter of hours and people here are so reactionary to everything I doubt many people have got a reasonable chance to even use it properly, I haven't used it myself at the moment I just don't have the cash on hand to download it but if I did I would be cutting right now.
Considering this is a complete re-write of the app I imagine that like imovie it will grow to become more complex but for now I would rather wait and see what happens when people have been cutting projects and films with this thing.

I was hopeful for Apple to get it together in FCPX.. They've been messing with this a long time.. It's very clear they are putting a lot of attention on the iphone market here. They may improve this a few versions down the road, but I think they will lose a lot of people in the meantime.

Until then, I hope black magic can get themselves straightened out and start supporting Premiere and the PC. (I mean resolve)

Trust me Jay - although I'd LOVE to see a PC version of Resolve... Resolve is worth the price of the Mac! That's all I can say. Resolve is immensely stable and bug free.

Sure, on Mac you have slow expensive graphics cards. But Resolve with a slow graphics card runs RINGS around CS5 on a PC with the fastest graphics card. Resolve is well-written software - optimized extremely well for the hardware.

You think Mercury Engine is fast? Try Resolve on a Mac. This from a PC advocate :P

Uh... sorry to derail the FCP X thread. Just posting while waiting for FCP X to download so I can see what everyone is talking about...

But back to FCP X, um, my 2c is that everyone who misses Color will find a superbly capable counterpart in Resolve.

Also, what does everyone think of the Magnetic Timeline? How is it going to work with audio - eg keeping all of your tracks together?

I don't know guys. I've just downloaded and it seems pretty freakin' awesome. It is SOOO fast. And isn't that a lot of what we all wanted? Just got back from REDucation where Michael Cioni from Light-Iron was talking about how native support of R3d's really isn't a top priority, and encourages everyone to use a transcode workflow right off the bat anyhow. Yes, it would be cool if more of this transcode and redrocket stuff was in the first release, but, let's face it, that probably was pretty unlikely. Already this morning they had an update that added support for xdcam and some other codecs. My guess is they've built this baby pretty modular and the plug-ins for Aja support, red support, etc. will be simpler than in the past and thus quickly forthcoming.

The only thing that is really different to me is that when you import say, a red proxy, you're not connect to the actual red proxy, you're connected to an alias of the red proxy (I know, an alias of an alias, etc.). Anyhow, it always is collecting all of these aliases and keeping them in one place on your local drive. I can't seem to figure out how to work off of the shared drive. And when I ask it to "organize" everything it says it will move all of the original data to one folder, but then it comes up right after and says it already is all in one folder. Hmm. Maybe some things to be worked out still. Ditto for dSLR footage...

However, I would warn all of you that are so excited about Premiere that I tried to move over to that about 6 months ago, and on the mac, it is awful. I'm talking about serious crashing, and crashing, and crashing. I've heard this echoed from everyone who tried it on a mac, although everyone on a pc said it was great. So, who knows, but I think probably this will be an awesome tool - but you're going to pay for ALOT of plug-ins!

I personally prefer Vegas Pro 10 over Premiere 5.5 (i own both). It's quite flexible, and in many ways more intuitive to work with than any other editor i've used. Supports 4K and 32 bit colorspaces, dpx:s, multicamera, uses Red files natively etc. and has audio tools that make using an external audio app feel like a good workaround to a problem that shouldn't exist in the first place ;-)

Not saying it's better for everyone, just that it's better for me personally - and at least worth a look for people considering a switch.

PS: I do envy the mercury playback engine though, i get much better real time performance on Premiere than on Vegas. On my oldish machine (it was great in 2007), with a low end CUDA enabled card, i get a realtime playback at what appears to be half resolution when editing .r3d:s in a 1080p timeline in Premiere - on Vegas, i need to drop to quarter rez for real time: i get around 15 fps at half rez, and around 5 fps at full. Despite this, i'm willing to sacrifice the performance for the Vegas workflow...

I pretty much feel the same way. (though I haven't used 5.5 much, I have worked on CS5) There's something very intuitive about Vegas Pro. It is just makes most sense and is my favourite interface. Sound is easily the best of all major NLEs. For R3Ds, Premiere Pro has the lead in performance as well as flexibility. Premiere Pro has a wider variety of plugins too, and easy dynamic link with AE. However, for some formats (DSLR, XDCAM) Vegas Pro 10 offers better performance for me. It's also much easier on the RAM and other resources. All it needs now is some solid GPU integration.

Anyway, back to FCP X. Seems much like a work-in-progress.

Maybe the message is just that the web is the future and we are all dinosaurs, calling ourselves 'pros'. If the kids aren't watching TV and cinema any more, but iGadgets instead, Apple is right and we are wrong.

P.S. Sorry for being sarcastic…

I've been running it on an IMAC 27 inch for about 2 months now and haven't had a problem. Of course I will say that it does run better on my PC, but its still usable on my MAC.

Without XML support the transcode workflow is useless. How are you supposed to get back to RAW for grading?

"Or capture video from tape using third-party video cards and software."

This may be the future way of things...

no OMF support , no xml out or in , no edl in/out , no r3d , no multi cam , no 3rd party device support , apparently some of these things are coming just not in version 1 today. no way to import a previous project yet

Is this true? Apple must be kidding! Then it's just a bling-bling iMovie.

It is at this point a little to much automated for my tasted, and i miss color wheels, curve and sliders controls.
There are some very great features!
I like that you can create your own transitions, generators in motion, and send them to FCPX that is a nice feature.
It takes some time to get all around and see how we can make it all work we like, and find the work arounds

Since were not all Film editors, I say give this a chance :)

Paul - are you using this with local storage, or mass storage like an XSAN? I think this is where it fell apart for me. I was inundated with "conforming, conforming, conforming" waits...

The rendering was nuts, though!
