  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Final Cut Pro X Released

no OMF support , no xml out or in , no edl in/out , no r3d , no multi cam , no 3rd party device support , apparently some of these things are coming just not in version 1 today. no way to import a previous project yet

Really!?? WTF? How can that be left out? Apple wake up.

FCP X is NOT for Professionals
No Log and Capture, No 3rdParty Plugins, codecs or Hardware today.

No EDL or XML support -in or out at this time.

Final Cut Pro X seems to have been built for YouTube personalities to edit their YouTube videos with.

Not only that but with Epic and Scarlet Red is poised to become both the dominant digital camera for features AND independent films, commercials, perhaps eventually TV, and so on. So I really just don't understand it. Why launch without R3D support???? ..... ugh.

The jury is still out but they really could have blown us all away -- and like they say, you never get a second chance to make a first impression.

That's why I feel so disappointed. They had the opportunity to release something absolutely stunning - some of these ideas seem good - but this is not something we can even use.

However, despite all my ranting, I am going to get a copy to see how it works, and to see if it's worth starting a campaign to make it more Pro/Red friendly. (I learned Premiere in less than an hour, so all's well if FCPX turns out to be a terrible mistake.)

It's interesting that the third party developers, AJA Matrox & BM, are not mentioned in the announcement or the web site. I believe that they probably didn't see FCPx until very recently, maybe even today. It also appears that there's no built in video plug in architecture, though it may well be invisible, so far. But it also appears it's a new API and XML io (under the hood). Knowing how long it takes to write divers for io hardware, I don't expect to see anything released for tape io from 3rd parties for quite some time, perhaps up to a year. Unless of course, the backlash, causes Apple to do it themselves.

On the FCPX page, when you click on the Final Cut Pro Overview, prominently featured below the video window is Powerful Media Organization. The example window below that shows ... drum roll ... Arri Alexa. Perhaps the fact that Alexa writes to Pro Res has endeared the camera to Apple. No mention of Red anywhere that I can find.

proxy r3d support works the same way as in fcp7, I believe most of the things we want are coming but will take some time. it does a lot of things right. its just missing a lot of professional workflow options right now

I would be interested to hear the impressions from the folks at RED about all of this.

I agree. J and J have been critical about Apple's QT and Gamma issues, but oddly silent about the new FCP, Red, their relationship, etc. Given how widespread Apple use is among Redusers I tend to think this oversight and neglect is far more on Apple's side than with Red ......

so, do those of us who own version 7 have to buy it all over again or do we get a discounted rate for the upgrade? I can't find anything on the website indicating that. Anyone?

My guess is there is an ironclad NDA in place.

Its odd that they tout Color on their own website then dump it a year later.... Apple make amazing products but every once in a while they contradict their own philosophy. Why would they just dump Color and dump some big 'pro' features-XML for example? They should continue with iMovie as the consumer product.

There is no support for any of the RAW camera formats or frame based workflows like DPX or Tiff working with this release. Workarounds for higher end cameras include using the QT reference files with R3D media, and just importing ProRes from the ARRI Alexa. However in both of these cases much of the camera metadata is ignored.
