  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

FINAL CUT PRO X now supports native R3D

Thanks for the correction and please pardon my ignorance. I was not fortunate enough to be working with Red material then, but I was following the company. I wonder how I missed this. Did it take a while before it was widely adopted, or was it just that the news simply hadn't reached under my rock? :-)

It was a big rock.

Right on, it's a quagmire out there for sure! Thus my self deprecating jokes to ensure I wasn't getting into rhetoric territory.

I personally jumped over into Adobe CS5, which also had native support. I currently just drag in my R3D files and edit natively. No transcoding, no proxies. Playback is peppy and real-time at 1/4 resolution, even with a number of effects on the clips!

My hope truly is that FCPX is a worthy competitor. I think Sony has been putting in a lot of effort, but their interface just didn't vibe for me when I had to use it on a small feature. The more competition, the better!

can fcpx now export proper xml and OMF? and does it work without
the event folder? and what about media management skills? relinking etc. does it work flawlessly?
Good news.

"Proper" XML? FCPX XML 1.2 is what it does, your app of choice may or may not support it.

Still no OMF or any DAW support that I'm aware of... Not even their own.

It still uses it's own media folder. You can choose if you want to place your original media in there or not.

Re-linking works.

Media management can be as easy or as difficult as you make it. It manages media very well if you can manage to let FCPX do it's own thing, but if you are working in a group of disparate systems using the same media there are hoops to jump through. It's methods are different but if you know your way around them you can make it work, if not you can waste a whole lot of time potentially making a considerable mess of things. In that way it is the same as any large database, I suppose.

The article claims a 3200% incraese in timeline rendering performance. Holy crap

It seems like a wild claim, doesn't it? I haven't timed it myself, but my sense is that renders are happening much more quickly indeed. In addition, "sharing" or otherwise outputting media can once again be done in the background. OTOH there are some operations relative to r3d media that you have to wait for, but they seem to happen fast enough to be inconsequential. When compared to waiting overnight for transcoded media it's a no brainer.

thanks scott, i have to check if scratch, clipster and resolve read those xml files. no omf? what are people doing to get the sound out ?

1. can't say
2. you can use davinci, redcine or the fcpx plug in on the raw files, the corrections are written in the side cars...everything remains raw until you export
3.trying to find out right now....seems to be seamless....but i have had to restart fcpx to see the results (when redcine and fcpx are open at the same time)
4.i don't have a rocket and this is not in any way scientific but i am not working with proxies (imac27 3.4, 32gb ram, 512 ssd, pegasus r12) and things are flying....
hope this helps...

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the reply. I'm all curious now. I guess for £199 (UK price) you can't go wrong. Interesting read.

I guess there are only two choices: use FCPX's audio tools or build the soundtrack completely in your DAW. Apple incorporated most or all of Logic's audio processing into FCP, but my experience not been good. Mixing is tedious and audio on the whole seems buggy. I have had entire clips and portions of clips vanish from both playback and the final output randomly and without explanation.

Its back to the old school workflow using Pro Tools most of the time.
Use Roles or X2Pro.

Hey, Cüneyt. For sound out, the app called x2Pro exports your timeline into AAF which can be sent to ProTools, Nuendo, and Pyramix. They come in 2 flavors. The LE version for $60 or the Pro version for $150. You can get it in the Mac App store. It looks like the best solution I have found so far. No OMF, though.

Just love the fact I can hear and edit the audio from the R3Ds :)

Ok so I've come across some issues. I've updated everything and I now have OSX 10.8.2 (I did have 10.6.8 before) but I'm still having the same problem.

My r3ds play great in the Event Browser, but if the play head is paused over a clip in the timeline the entire clip turns green until I move the play head or hit play.

I'm editing an old project I shot on a Build 16 Red One so I don't know if that has anything to do with it (which it shouldn't).

I'm going to redownload the Red Plugin when I get home and see if that does anything, but has anyone else experienced issues like this?

Now we're in the "whats your spec" territory.
This sounds like a video card issue.
I think we should take this post to the Workflow section.

Using this made me cry. Literally. With gratitude. And relief. After such problems with Redcine-x (that I've posted in the help forum) Final Cut Pro X works perfectly and is using all 1200% of my CPU power to display what I assume is 1/2 res debayer NATIVELY. I can't even play 1/4 in redcine-x (i'm without a red rocket).

This is AMAZING. And because of this, I'm going to throw myself into Final Cut X. Haven't used it for anything serious but this update came on the morning I was due to start editing a big project. I've been watching FCPX videos on Apple's website and it now, with this update, does everything FCP7 did that's important (at least to me) and has so many nice new features as well. Just finished keywording all my clips :)

I still need to get used to the timeline but I discovered the 'position' tool which allows you to move things around as it were FCP7 (instead of the magnetics of the new timeline).

Being able to change RAW settings right within FCPX is amazing. Thanks Apple and RED.

tried FCP X, have 10.7.5, can't get it to play R3d. I have a trial version but it is the 10.0.6 version. Man, it would be nice if it worked but I'm still on CS5.5 and it really seems like a no brainer at the mo, with a bundle that includes photoshop, After Effects, Audition, Encore and Media Encoder.

I'm cutting a feature doc at the mo with SD, EOS, EX1 and R3d footage all on the same timeline!

And I have an ATI Radeon 5770 in my Quad Core Mac Pro. I mean its not a great card but its the standard card for the Mac Pro so I don't understand why mine has an issue and I haven't heard of anyone else having this problem.

I have the same card in a Mac Pro 2.66GHz running Lion. No issues.
I only suspect the Nvidias to have issues since the drivers are constantly updated.
I have a slew of those to keep an eye on day to day.

Alright so I think I figured out the issue. I think FCPX just isn't compatible with older footage. I just cut together some test footage I found when the Epics and Scarlets first started coming out. Cut together 2 5K clips and a 4K HD clip and it was as smooth as butter. Had to do a little background rendering on the 4K clip (because it was a 5K project) but it played through it while it was rendering like nothing. And no weird green issue. It's no big deal to me. I don't see myself using Build 16 r3ds anytime soon. But here's a screen grab to show what was really going on.
