  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Field of view comparison - MX VS Dragon at various res?

Would be great to know how much data I need to gobble to get the same field of view as MX 4K, MX 5K Full, etc. I have not seen such a chart anywhere.

Have been told that 5K Mx = field of view of Dragon 5.5K, but what about 4K 16:9? 3K?

For many of our clients, 5K as the absolute max that their computers can handle. What field of view will Dragon 5K give me in MX terms? Same as 4K 16:9 on Red One? More? Less?

From what I understand, yes the FOV of 5K Dragon = 4K MX.

I also believe that the tighter pixels on Dragon means that Dragon 5K should look a lot like Epic 5K (in terms of the sharpness when it downscales to 1080)...except it will have noticeably higher DR and cleaner blacks obv.

And ps I agree with you, I work in broadcast and I can see some of my clients being perfectly happy with 5K.

Nick, thank you for that info - are you sure?

BTW - I am not asking about sharpness. Tighter pixels will not make anything look the same as a narrower field of view on a lens. The lens becomes the limiting factor very quickly.

My clients would be more happy with 1080p than anything else, because that pretty much saturates human visual ability at normal viewing distances and virtually no one has a 4K monitor at home anyway, even if their eyes could perceive at difference between that monitor and a 1080p one (which in fact they most likely cannot - so who cares) , but they will tolerate 5K for other advantages.

To me what is most important is field of view as it changes focus fall-off and many other factors.
 
Rob see Phil's note below from his Dragon Lens Coverage sheet:

Dragon 5K = S35 3 perf (well it has a 0.97 crop, so it's amost exactly S35).

Similarly, wasn't RED MX designed to conform to S35 at 4K?

Meaning, FOV of Dragon 5K would approx FOV of Epic at 4K (both windowed down to S35 standard).


Epic Dragon Crop Factors S35 Relative to Super 35mm 3-Perf 26mm diagonal (Dragon 5K):
6K Full = 0.81x
5.5K = 0.88x
5K = 0.97x
4.5K = 1.08
4K = 1.21x
3.5K = 1.39x
3K = 1.61x
2.5K = 1.94x
2K = 2.42x

yes the red mx should be able to do s35 at 4k…does anybody else have a comment on this????

It would be great to just have a little MX 5K = Dragon 5.5K (the one figure I am sure about) and so on little table. But mayeb some simple math will work (?)

SO 5.5/5 = 1.1

4 X 1.1 = 4.4 for example, but maybe I making an error here….
