Hi Red,

Please add four S16mm high-speed capture modes that record RedCode RAW at a center crop of the sensor, as follows:

  • 2400x1350 (that's 16:9 aspect ratio, targeting 1080p, 12.96mm x 7.29mm effective sensor size)
  • 2498x1350 (that's 1.85:1 aspect ratio, targeting a 2K DCI master at 1998x1080, 13.49mm x 7.29mm sensor size)
  • 2560x1072 (that's 2.39:1 aspect ratio, targeting a 2K DCI master at 2048x858, 13.82mm x 5.79mm effective sensor size)
  • 2560x1350 (that's 1.9:1 aspect ratio, targeting a full raster 2K DCI master, 13.82mm x 7.29mm effective sensor size)

All of these can be done now by shooting 3K 2:1 and cropping, but that limits maximum framerates, uses more data than necessary, and makes it impossible to generate proxy files off of the camera using an external recorder.

My sense is that framerates of 250fps should be possible with these settings, a 25% increase over 3K 2:1. It will also avoid the softness at 1080p delivery that occurs with 2K recording today.

Anyone who wants to get the S16mm look could use these modes. At the ~80% debayer efficiency RedCineX has now, the footage should be very, very sharp, and we still get all the benefits of shooting RAW. All but the largest sizes are covered by the full set of Illumina S16 T1.3 primes without vignetting.

If anyone else would like to see this, please let Red know.

Here's a potential way to name these modes:

  • S16 HD is 2400x1350
  • S16 1.85 is 2498x1350
  • S16 2.39 is 2560x1072
  • S16 Full is 2560x1350

That'll make them easier to discuss, and put into the menus on the camera.

You are making an Epic feature request given the forum location and frame rates under discussion ... but I think this would be of at least some interest to Scarlet users as well.

Generally speaking its a 2.5k S16 mode

And yes, I'd vote to make that sort of thing available in firmware. Whenever this turns into a democracy that is. ;)

Agreed, this should also work on the Scarlet (just at lower frame rates).

+1

...but from a priority pov I would love to see a S35 like 16:9 mode first?

We did some 2.5k crop then downsample to 1920x1080 tests a while back and agree that it is really usable. We did this with Ultra 16 lenses and they are fantastic.
Michael

PS I'm pretty sure all the Ultra16 (apart from the 6mm which I havn't used/checked) will work well.

+1 here

+1 on Epic too.
