After the Release of FCP X, seeing it completely out of the competition, a fear have raised up to my mind..
without competition things won't evolve the way it should, and here comes fears that the development of adobe products will get a rest,
I've always trusted adobe in every step they did since PPro 7.0 (I actually used Premiere since version 4.0), they always developed.. but there was a competitor..
Now, being the only pro app that satisfies the professional needs,, :frown5: well, I hope its only fears..

I think Apple realize that the professional editors out there stand for maybe 1% of the market compared to people who want to edit their holiday films to show the family + make them look like Hollywood blockbusters in a few clicks! I think that's smart business but as an editor for some 12 years it hurts really bad! I've been using Adobe for 12 years too and I'm not worried about the future. I think they are taking this opportunity and running with it. Avid have hard a hard time in the last few years against Final Cut. It's Adobe's turn to make it's mark and that's incredibly exciting. They're true innovators and their position is stronger than ever.

Don't fear!

– There still is competition called Avid
– Unlike Apple Adobe makes their living from software
– They made very strong (and expensive) steps before even knowing how badly Apple would fail – they even might have felt threatened before
– They listen to pro users, 5.5 is a proof and they talk about their plans, like David here at Reduser

I have full trust into Adobe and I'm switching right now.

I've decided on the same thing yesterday! I already used ppro for a couple of months but was waiting for fcpx to see if I should return to fcp, because I know it so well. I am glad things are so clear. Adobe is part of my new future.

hehe Funny, well, this raises my fears more and more..

the only thing that makes me rest a little is that the history of adobe is always aimed at professional markets..
just why apple did such a thing? does they really believe in the future of media is only web based? no cinema screens any more?

I don't know about cinema screens, but they certainly believe CDs and Blu-rays are going to the cloud. At the end of the day, you have to realize that it is all about money and profit. Adobe feel they can make a profit out of the professional market, while Apple feels otherwise. Personally, I am going to go with Apple making hell of a lot more money from FCP X than Adobe do through CS5.5 (not to mention selling Macs to run FCP X). As David has pointed out, there's a whole new generation of Youtube Videographers for whom FCP X is a killer product at a killer price, and Apple feels this nascent market will in the future dwarf the professional market. There's a reason why Apple is the largest tech company in the world - it knows how to appeal to the masses. FCP X could be a superb move for Apple. Or may be not, let's wait and see.

The fear is, of course, that Adobe will follow suit, if FCP X is a financial success. But someone will always be there to address the professional market.

You can't buy publicity like that! Seriously, that will increase sales. We are all going to feel a little sheepish as time goes on. FCPX is a fantastic deal, a great Editor, raising the bar in so many areas. The idea, is to make filmmaking easy and of high quality, FCPX does just that. That was an excellent skit by the way .... easily done on apple movie making software. You want it done right, you want it done fast, you use FCPX. Apple is a leader, not a follower ... get in line. The train is leaving the station.

FCP-X probably will be a good move for Apple. There are a lot of small shop"pros" that finish on one desktop NLE ingest to output. It seems like it will work OK as is for the vast majority of those folks. At $299 FCP-X is an excellent buy that will have broad appeal to a vastly larger market than the high end collaborative online entertainment production business.

It may or may not eventually be the game changer for the latter group. Depends on Apple's focus. But the Eye of Sauron seems to be gazing elsewhere at the moment.

Adobe is working very hard for the high end business these days and it shows. Their sales of CS Production Suite packages is up more than 45% over the last two years, BBC converted and bought several thousand seats of CS5. Adobe has more than two million installed seats already. Not too shabby. For most of their history Adobe has been the professional software that along with Apple high end workstations captured and defined most of the pro media arts production market. Adobe has stayed the course and know where their bread and butter is.

Apple has been behind the professional market curve for several years and by all indications they still are. Their focus has changed. There is a lot more serious competition out there these days.

I talked with an Avid developer last year and he said their problem is (was) they have a lot of hardware in the field that just will not support the 4K processing loads. He said that upgrading the software to support 4K would be easy to do but they were worried about the politics of having sold very expensive computers that were obsolete overnight.

What I don't get is why Apple didn't just make a Final Cut Home or Final Cut Web version. Pulling out XML export support is just shooting yourself in the foot, I don't get it.

I wouldn't worry about Adobe getting lax; do any of the other big NLE vendors have developers on RedUser? I think they have more than demonstrated their commitment.

Yes, Adobe it is. It's affordable and I have to agree, they make their money from software, not phones. Apple probably don't even see a future in pro computers anymore. Their long term predictions may turn out to be true, but I am not about to start editing ads in front of my clients on an iphone or ipad. And now with 'Orwellian' icloud, they are adopting the same principles that they once stood against in 1984.

No need to worry:
Avid,
Autodesk,
The Foundry,
Lightworks

There are competitors enough to keep Adobe on it's toes.

Lightworks could be a real sleeper as it moves forward. I have been playing with the beta release and DV footage a bit. Steep learning curve for me, but it is looking like a very powerful collaborative workhorse.

for the pro apple's new wave guys, I would remind you of a very stupid thing.. Final Cut Pro X does not support older projects from earlier versions, simply does not support all the editors who worked with previous versions.. come on.. its becoming really a true phone company.. look up how they force developers to use their own code to write apps for the iOS.. its simply the same way they think.. they would make better money with such a cheap product, but I'm not going to ride this time.. I have some nice similar editing apps on Ubuntu which are completely free, they might be less featured than FCP X, I don't use them coz they don't fill up my needs.. maybe when lightworks for linux is out, I'm gonna give it a try..
