  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

FCPX vs CC/CS6 as of June 2013

2 copies of original media
1 copy of Prores proxy media (with a backup if you want)

So yes. You can edit the whole thing with only one drive attached to the machine, the other can be on the shelf as a backup or used as a project backup folder.

What do you mean by scratch disk? There is no scratch disk in FCP X, just the disk you have your media on, that's it.

Buy whatever drives you think your footage is worth. Just have more than one copy or you will regret it.

Ok, I see. I read a little and it seems that with todays drives and interfaces and programs like FCPX , there's no need for several drives for editing. Jus one. Big and fast :D

Would you recommend to backup the editing drive with Time Machine to the second drive?

Time machine is good for system drives. Maybe shotput for media drives or SuperDuper.

I'm looking for good training resources. So far I found Lynda, Ripple training, Larry Jordan and themovieswemake.com. Which one is recommended?

EDIT: One more concern... If I purchase the software now, the FCPX 10.0.8. What happens when at the end of the year with the new Mac Pro the new version of the software is released? Will I have to buy it again or there will be some reduced price updates?

Interesting thread ... I made my decision looking at the quality of the rendered output (for R3D source material) ... before making the decision to invest the time to re-learn.

For the same R3D source material FCPX is good (& not significantly different from RCX with default setting) ... PR is soft by comparison.

Try it for your self : compare RCX, FCPX and PR rendered output.

PLease share the variables of your test. I am curious.

1. RCX settings
2. FCP X sequence settings

There is a lot that can change in those sequence settings and the RCX OP settings. Also, with and without Rocket there is a difference in renders from RCX.

David

To minimise (potential) differences, I exported from RCX using default values / as shot metadata (I did have a RR card installed) and the same for FCPX and the same from PR all to output to say a 1080p@24 (QT PR HQ). On purpose I did not want to start setting parameters in each (even when they should read the RMD).

In my tests I did see differences, and to my eye, RCX is better than FCPX which is better than PR.
Also, PR was the worst in terms of render time (seemed not to make use of the RR card and could not see any way to make it do so).

I ran these tests on a trial PR6 when it was announced, on recommendation from a colleague - personally could not see the benefit. FCPX seems fine for my relative simple needs and the render output quality made it pretty definitive.

As I said, do some tests and see what you think ...

Thanks David,

thats a good starting point.

Ill post some results when I do it. Really, just need to run a few 1 frame tests.

Cheers.

David

the rocket render may have sharpened things up a bit.

Thanks David.

I just did two 1 frame 5K QT movies and put them in this dropbox folder:

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/smvhptemszf25gh/kkft4izBh2

The only difference is that the RCX frame is slightly smaller 10.1 MB compared to 10.3MB from FCPX.

I have also included my RCX preset file (for anyone who wants to do their own test and a file to show that I used the exact same settings in FCP X

It will be a free updates

Thanks! That's good to know, because somewhere I read that this "big update" won't be a free update for current owners of the program. Hope it will be free...

No, we don't know. Muhamad also doesn't know.

The thing is, FCPX 10.0.0 was released in June 2011.
Since then, the program has 8 updates, which a couple of them also had big new features, and all of it was free.

But look at Logic X. Logic 9 was a program on the App Store. Logic X was a new program. People who bought 9, had to pay the full price.
On the other hand, that 'full' price was the same as updates used to cost.

To be honest; nobody knows. Maybe the next update will be very big, and Apple will charge everyone again.
On the other hand, maybe because of the troubled history of FCPX, and the bad launch, they will make an effort to give a couple of new feature-updates away for free. Who knows? I don't.

Better budget for the crazy 50 dollar upgrade ;)

Well, I said the updates will be free because, AFAIK there are no mechanism for a paid updates in the Mac App Store.

Hi Muhamad, you are right, but Logic X showed us that Apple had a 'different solution': You just had Logic 9 in the App Store. Suddenly, you had Logic X, and it was in the App Store as a new program (Logic 9 nowhere to be found), so all owners of 9 had to buy the new version.
I also think Apple will play it differently with FCPX for a couple of next updates, because they are in a position where they have much more to prove then with Logic. But who knows? Maybe Apple releases a big fall-update, called official FCPX 10.1, and you have to pay again.
I also think it won't happen, but with Logic they showed they have a kind of upgrade mechanism (namely, charge full price again, but let the price be so low that it's about the same or cheaper as an upgrade used to cost, which would be the same as for FCPX, which costs the same as an old update for Final Cut Studio). We don't know.

I prefer the app store method over a subscription model. This way I can freeze my system where I like it if I want to or hold off upgrades until projects are completed, etc.

I also feel as though I own the software as opposed to renting it.

David

Free or not, the cost and the 5 user license is gold.

Heck that software costs less than a tactical top plate :)

Workflow question:

I will edit my footage in FCPX. Then color grade it in Resolve Lite.
Problem 01: I want to use Filmconvert also.
Problem 02: My MBP 13" with its Intel HD4000 is not supported by Resolve.

Questions:
1, When should I apply Filmconvert? Before or after grading in Resolve?
2, What does it mean that my MBP is not supported by Resolve? I can't even use the program, or can use it but it will be slow?
3, Is there a possibility that Resolve 10 will support the Intel HD 4000 card?
4, When Resolve 10 will be released?
5, I saw a couple of shorts from Philip Bloom, who regraded some of his stuff in Filmconvert. Can Filmconvert be used for grading and entire movie, or did he just apply it an an already graded footage?
6, I have access to a 2012 january iMac 21" computer. Can I use that for Resolve? In this case, if I have to edit on my MBP 13", how should I transfer my footage, or timeline in order to edit on another computer, in this case the iMac 21"?

So I would appreciate any advice, tip, solution for my problem. Thanks a lot! :)

I've never use Filmconvert so I cannot help you for that.

1.
2. Right now there are no OpenCL support for HD 4000, you can open the program, but you cannot do anything with that
3. From what I read OS X Maverick will add support for OpenCL on HD 4000, so it's not about Resolve support, it's about OS X support
4. Late Q3
5.
6. You can use the iMac. Copy all necessary footage, export XML from FCP X, import XML in Resolve, select the folder where the footage is located
