  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I thought it would be great to have a separate thread to report different performance results from the new FCPX with native R3D support -
Hardware specs - FPS - Stability - with and without Rocket - with and without background proXies - etc

First impressions

Updated and imported .r3d file (4k). Working on a iMac 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7 - 16 GB Ram - Radeon 6970. Very easy. Very cool. Generated thumbnails immediately.

- Playback settings: "Better Performance" - works flawlessly
- Playback settings: "High Quality" - obvious, much slower performance without RED Rocket but option to turn on still utilize if installed
- "Modify RED RAW settings" (under the info tab) was what was most impressive to me... with the ability to change Color Space, Gamma, ISO, FLUT, DRX, etc (with the ability to with back to the original camera settings

Looking forward to digging into this...

I'm on latest Retina Macbook Pro 15", with better performance selected I'm getting full real time playback of 4K HD files, even did a few basic dissolves in real time! Obviously it gets a little sticky here and there, the CTI doesn't slide along like butter as with Pro Res, but pretty incredible stuff on a laptop!

THX for these replies guys. Anyone noticing any (big or small) differences between 4k 4kHD and 5k? Anyone with the reported problems with heat/high fan speed on Retina 15?

Are you hearing other reports similar to Toia's... that particular laptop is having problems? I too am interested if there are other reports of this.

No issues here on retina 15 2.7ghz 16gb ram. Plays like butter at 1/4. Doesn't mean I will start editing with FCPX though..

:) I was aCtually thinking of him, just didn´t want to put his name up as a posterguy with a problem. No, I only heard about his Case.

How high are you talking about?

My fan regularly ramps up when rendering, sometimes during heavy timelines on both fcp x and premiere pro.

Temps often are around 70 deg during heavy rendering.

Oh. I don't see any harm in it. It's not as if I'm suggesting anything by it. Toia's a mobile post house ninja.

Mac Pro 2.93GHz/32GBRAM/10.8.2
ATTO R680 w/G-Tech eS Pro 8TB
No ROCKET (temp moved to Magma)
RCXPro updated
FCPX 10.0.6

What can I tell yaa, smooth as butter.
Love the fact I can change the basics in FCPX.
I still havent been able to make a change in RCXPro and then have it update in FCPX.
Maybe if I shut it an app restart.
I imported (thanks Apple for bringing back Command+I) with no proxy/copy on so Im reading right from the G-Tech where the R3Ds reside.
I might not need that ROCKET on the Mac Pro anymore :)

imac27 3.4 32gb ram, 512ssd striped via thunderbolt, pegasus r12 raid 5 via thunderbolt
10.8.2, fcpx 10.0.6

supersmooth so far....i actually insert the red ssds, import from there (copy to fcpx events folder checked)....i am a little dissapointed with the adjustments available in fcpx...but for me so far the previews have updated after i made the adjustments in rcxpro....i think having both apps open at the same time might delay the previews in fcpx...
i have found out in the past that fcpx is a memory hog....16gb is not enough...32gb make a HUGE difference.....
but really this is a dream....i really thought i needed a rocket....i don't see any delay so far....working with 4K....have not exported anything...

You try with no copy to events?
I get wicked speeds plus playback during RAW edit in almost real time.

same here....i have that option checked so fcpx automatically copies the clips from card to their final destination....i don't use proxies...
i wish the plug in gave more options....i would also love to see red raw support in aperture....

I'd like to see the possibility to save .RMD settings with a name and re-apply them to other clips like in Premiere. Would be even better to read them in Motion (like you can in AEFX).

But, apart from that, it runs very smooth on my Retina MBP, even from a single drive via USB-3.

Thank you, Apple, I might come back!

Much appreciated guys. I am probably not the only one out shopping for hardware for a new post workhorse, so this is hopefully valuable for many. ... maybe we could ask Jeff Kilgroe to the microphone ... :)

I can't seem to get a workable solution yet performance-wise. My computers aren't super-new - MBPro early 2010 / MacPro early 2011 but they are reasonably well-spec'd and cope pretty well with RCX and PPro without a rocket. I'm principally starting with 4k files from Scarlet at 24fps.

I think it'd be helpful if one could adjust the the res to 1/8 or 1/16th as that seems to be serviceable in Premiere right now. At 1/4 res (FCPX) I just can't get the performance in the usual editing tasks.

The render times I'm getting seem to be more in line with a full-res software debayer in RCX. Being able to set the export debayer to 'nearest fit' might help in this regard. From the workflow video, it seems these settings are immutable. Proxy renders seem to be coming out pretty fast though.

Something that seems to be tantaiisingly close though, is the presence of external audio channels sync'd in RCX. In the FCPX info tab I can see the correct no. of channels and in the timeline I can see the waveform displayed as a reference. Just no sound :( Is this coming? Nothing as yet, compares to RCX's batch sync.

And like others, my fan is getting a proper workout too and the MBpro chassis is super hot!

Why not edit the proxies and relink it after the edit?
